My Formula for Indelible Success

After 25 years in Human Resources Operations and Leadership, I may not be a credentialed expert in many things, but I do know a thing or two about good policies, good processes, the needs of people, and the improved behavior and outcomes that ensues when all are addressed well.

This past fall I had the honor to present at the Colorado Health Care Association annual conference, about the salient perspective gained from working with people of all skill levels, influences, and occupations.

Distilled into a formula that applies to every setting, business and personal alike, I am its foremost advocate and champion. As a prerequisite, let me first share with you a deeply held belief.

To achieve excellence, you must first EXPECT it and then PLAN for it, with unmatched fervor.

Lofty as this might sound, I of all people am acutely aware of life, its imperfection, and the challenges it throws us. And, as much, countless hours of self-reflection, team observation, and coaching have also revealed that when we “control what we can control” and deploy these traits, we’ll see much better outcomes: at home and at work, in our marriages and relationships, as parents and friends, business owners, professionals, and leaders respectively.

I call it S3 + C3 = E3.

Simplicity: We cannot and will not be able to do everything in life and in work. We must discern and prioritize. When we know what matters most, we are then able to pass on that focus.
Sincerity: One must be humble and honest. From earnest intentions, trust grows, even if efforts are not perfect.
Solution-Oriented: We have two choices in life, always. Complain or try to make better what needs bettering. Our mindset is contagious and breeds hope.
Calm: The hardest thing to coach and recently growing in attention, emotional wellbeing and regulation has immeasurable impact on individuals and teams of every type. Whether feigned or organic, the energy and attitude we bring to every situation can momentarily change its trajectory.
Clarity: Undoubtably the most crucial element of success is this – impeccable clarity. Being clear is kind – with ourselves and others. It is the cousin of honesty and drives to truth. It is reliant on keen observation and impeccable communication. It is the foundation of accountability, without which, improvement of self/process/outcomes is not possible.
Charity: Patience, tolerance, compassion, empathy – founded upon a real curiosity and desire to understand. Every person seeks to be seen, known, and understood… and challenged to do the same.

What results is Energy | Engagement | Excellence.

What if each of us made 2026 about getting back to these basics… What improvements would we see all around us? I’ll be eager to hear!

Yours in the pursuit of excellence,
