Dr. Janna Gelderman-Moffett Brings Specialized Women's Health Care to Lafayette
When Dr. Janna Gelderman-Moffett moved to Lafayette in 2011, she brought with her over two decades of hospital medicine experience - from emergency rooms in rural Ohio to building hospitalist programs from the ground up. But it was the countless women she encountered throughout her career, struggling through menopause without adequate support, that would ultimately inspire her next chapter.
"I witnessed women feeling dismissed, confused, or simply not knowing where to turn for specialized care during this significant life stage," Dr. Janna explains. In 2021, after becoming a North American Menopause Society Certified Practitioner, she founded Zephyr Health with a clear mission: to fill that critical gap in women's healthcare.
Dr. Janna's path to medicine began at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, where she graduated in 1995. She completed her internship at Greenbrier Valley Hospital and her internal medicine residency at the Medical College of Ohio in 1999. What followed was a remarkable career spanning emergency medicine, hospitalist leadership, and eventually, women's health specialization.
Her hospital medicine credentials are impressive. As Chief Hospitalist at Mercy Grayling Hospital in Michigan, she built their hospitalist program from scratch. She then spent seven years at Avista Hospital in Colorado as both Chief Hospitalist and Division Chief of Medicine, managing a comprehensive program for a 200+ bed facility. She also served as an Ambassador Chief Hospitalist for Sound Physicians, helping establish new programs and mentoring other physicians.
But it was her shift toward women's health that revealed her true calling. "After over 20 years in hospital medicine, I saw a need that wasn't being met," she says. Today, Dr. Janna specializes in perimenopause, menopause, and sexual health - topics often overlooked in traditional healthcare settings.
What sets Zephyr Health apart is Dr. Janna's unique combination of deep clinical expertise and specialized focus. Her approach goes beyond simply prescribing treatments. She's committed to truly educating patients, giving them the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions and advocate for themselves.
Sexual health is a vital component of her practice. Conditions like dyspareunia, vulvodynia, and low libido are common, treatable, and deserve thoughtful attention. "Many women suffer in silence because they feel embarrassed or don't know that effective treatments exist," Dr. Janna explains.
When rising costs threatened to compromise her mission of affordable, transparent care, Dr. Janna transitioned Zephyr Health to 100% telehealth, eliminating office overhead while improving accessibility. "Women no longer have to take time off work or drive across town for appointments," she says.
Beyond individual patient care, Dr. Janna is bringing education directly to the community through a partnership with The Exercise Coach. "Exercise is one of the most powerful tools women have for managing symptoms and maintaining health, yet many women don't know how to adjust their fitness approach during perimenopause and menopause," she explains. "These talks will help bridge that knowledge gap and reach women where they already are.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Janna is pursuing her fellowship with the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health (ISSWSH) and developing a podcast focused on evidence-based menopause and sexual health information.
Her advice to residents navigating menopause is straightforward: "Find a provider you can speak openly with and trust. And remember - you deserve evidence-based care. Don't let anyone tell you that suffering through menopause is 'natural' or that you just need to tough it out."
From her home in Lafayette, where she lives with her husband (who works as the event coordinator for Art Nite Out), Dr. Janna continues her mission. Their son recently completed his BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She's ensuring every woman has the knowledge, support, and specialized care needed to navigate the menopause transition with confidence, comfort, and clarity.
