A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Service
Plumbing has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, even when I was sure it was not the path I wanted to take.
I grew up in Germantown, Maryland, raised by an Irish immigrant father who had only a fifth-grade education and a first-generation Irish mother. I am one of seven kids, in a household where hard work was expected. My dad was a plumbing contractor, and I spent many summers and weekends helping him on jobs.
When my dad was closing his plumbing business, I was in 10th grade. I did not know exactly what I wanted to do for a living, but I was pretty sure it was not what he was doing. Life has a way of bringing things full circle, and now here I am.
I moved to Mount Airy in 1991, and this community has been home ever since. I have been married for 21 years and have two kids, Shannon, a high school junior, and Matthew, a sophomore, along with our black lab, Smoky. As my family grew, so did my appreciation for the kind of work that allows you to provide for others while contributing something meaningful to your community.
Before starting All Around Plumbing, I spent about 10 years working for a plumbing company, beginning as an apprentice and working my way up. Eventually, I ran a department where I was responsible for personnel, financials, operations and overseeing three to four million dollars in annual revenue. That experience gave me a strong understanding of both the trade itself and what it takes to run a business responsibly.
In 1999, I started All Around Plumbing with a goal to provide high-quality plumbing services and installations to the community. Today, we are a full-service residential and commercial plumbing contractor. We handle everything from leaky faucets and toilets to water heater repairs and replacements, tankless water heater conversions, clogged drains, well pumps, and full plumbing installations for new homes, commercial buildings, and tenant fit-outs.
Being able to serve both residential and commercial clients allows us to support customers through new construction, renovations, and long-term maintenance with consistency and expertise.
Every business faces challenges. Recently, the industry has faced a shortage of qualified technicians as many experienced plumbers retire or can no longer do the physical work. For decades, I have been involved with Frederick County Public Schools Career and Technical Education programs, which has helped us recruit, hire, and train younger people interested in learning the trade. I believe strongly in mentoring the next generation and showing them the opportunities the trades can offer.
Giving back to the community has always been important to me. We sponsor several local youth sports programs, including Brunswick, Urbana, Oakdale, Linganore, Mount Airy, Tuscarora High School, and St. John’s Catholic Prep. Over the years, we have donated tens of thousands of dollars to local nonprofits, including the Frederick Rescue Mission, SHIP of Frederick County, Mt. Airy Net, Advocates for Homeless Families, The Religious Coalition of Frederick County, Blessings in a Backpack, Central Maryland Youth for Christ, WFMD’s Christmas Cash for Kids, the Mount Airy Duck Race, local charity golf tournaments, and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
Looking ahead, I am excited about several upcoming projects, including a major renovation of a home that is more than 145 years old. As materials and tools continue to evolve, we stay current so we can work more efficiently and offer customers better options. After 27 years in business, I am encouraged to see renewed interest from young people entering the trades and am proud to help shape the future of our industry.
