The Hayes Family

Family member names: Josh, Sarah, Caleb (13), Mason (11)
Street: Duany Road
Pets: Karma
Profession(s): She Tris Race Director/Entrepreneur (Sarah) Retired Portfolio Manager/Programmer (Josh)
Favorites Activities/Hobbies: running, triathlons, walking Karma, traveling, skiing, baseball, and hanging out with our family/cousins.
Park/Play area/Hang out: We spend a lot of time hanging out on our street. The boys have lifelong friends here and we enjoy the cul-de-sac with our neighbors from time to time. We also love Eastlake park for basketball and playing with Karma, and we spend a lot of time on the marsh trail.
Restaurants: We are big fans of all the I’On restaurants
Vacation destination: We’ve just returned from Park City, Utah where we all ski. It is probably our favorite family hobby. Second place would be Europe, where we can meet up with friends we made while living abroad.
Sports teams: Chicago Cubs, UNC Tarheels, Clemson and South Carolina
TV show/Movie: The Last of Us, Jeopardy!, and Guardians of the Galaxy movies
Music: We listen to a big variety: from rap, to EDM, and Taylor Swift, to Gypsy Kings
Family dinner: Josh does a lot of grilling dinners for us.
Do you have any family traditions? We always run the Turkey Trot downtown as a family on Thanksgiving morning. On Christmas Eve, we host our very large extended family and everyone gets matching pajamas.
What college/university did you attend? Josh and I met at the College of Charleston in 1999. We were friends before we started dating in 2001. Josh majored in BioChemistry, and I majored in International Business with a minor in Spanish.
Where are you originally from? Josh is originally from Barnardsville, NC (near Asheville) and I’m from Mullins, SC.
How long have you lived in this neighborhood? We moved into the neighborhood in March 2012, so we’ve owned our home for 13 years! We did, however, take one year and rent out the house while we lived in the Netherlands (July 2021-July 2022).
What do you like to do to relax? We like to hang out with friends by the pool or on the porch. Family movie nights are also a good chill time.
How are you involved in the community? Sarah is very involved in the community. She is a co-owner of the She Tris Sprint Triathlon events that welcome women and girls of all ages to try a short distance triathlon (one is hosted here in I’On!). She also serves on the board of Charleston Moves, a non-profit that advocates for safer infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians. This is the organization’s 20th anniversary, and we are seeing the fruits of that advocacy right now in the building of the new bridge over the Ashley River.
If you have kids, what activities are they involved with? The boys enjoy running. Caleb is a distance runner and Mason prefers sprinting. Both boys run track and cross country for their school and Mount Pleasant Track Club.
What is your favorite part about living in your neighborhood? We love our little nook of I’On. We are tucked away with the absolute nicest neighbors living on our street. We are a relatively new dog family and have gotten to know so many more neighbors while walking Karma. We love the trails and the awesome dining/gathering spots at the front of the neighborhood.
