Drue Smith: Navigating the Heart of Hurricane Real Estate

Meet Drue Smith, a dedicated REALTOR with deep roots in Hurricane, West Virginia, who proudly represents Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate Central. With 34 years of calling Hurricane home, Drue has not only built a successful real estate career but has also become an integral part of the community.

Drue's family history is intertwined with Hurricane, dating back generations. "I was born and raised in Hurricane, still live here to this day, and plan to live here the rest of my life!" Drue proudly shares. His family's legacy includes a connection to education and community service, with relatives working in the local school system and contributing significantly to Hurricane's vibrant community.

Reflecting on his journey, Drue opens up about his early aspirations, saying, "When I was younger, I always wanted to be an architect or do something with building homes." He decided not to pursue architecture  due to all the math involved, and so his path eventually led him to real estate. Drue started part-time during college, drawn back to his first love—homes. His decision was solidified when family circumstances led him to put a pause on college, focusing wholeheartedly on his real estate career.

Drue began his real estate journey at Old Colony REALTORS in 2009 and later joined Family First Realty, where he worked until August 2023. Currently affiliated with Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate Central, Drue's commitment to helping clients buy and sell homes has been a constant throughout his career.

What sets Drue apart is not just his extensive experience but also his ability to navigate market shifts. "I feel like I've seen it all. It's something new every day. A lot of problem-solving," he shares. Having started his career during a recession and experienced both challenging and prosperous markets, Drue brings a wealth of knowledge to his clients.

In addition to his real estate expertise, Drue acknowledges the importance of relationships. "My goal is to provide the best service to my clients and community not just during our current transaction, but for a lifetime," he emphasizes. This commitment to lasting relationships is evident in the key staff members who support Drue in his endeavors.

Sharon Crook, whom he worked with for over a decade, and Susan Richards, his former closing coordinators, played pivotal roles in Drue's career, and he expresses gratitude for their contributions. Cindy Elkins, who is now retired, provided significant guidance and support when Drue firsst started at Family First Realty. Tyler Browning, his current closing coordinator, continues the tradition of excellence in supporting Drue's clients.

Drue's advice to residents emphasizes the significance of professionalism and seeking expert guidance in real estate matters. "Be nice!! And always do the right thing. Call a professional," he advises. Recognizing that real estate is a substantial financial investment, Drue encourages residents to rely on trusted local agents to navigate the complexities of the market.

Beyond his real estate endeavors, Drue's commitment extends to coaching, a role he embraced following his grandpa, Tom Sutherland's coaching legacy. Drue retired from coaching in 2021, but his career included significant milestones, including Hurricane's first basketball state tournament appearance and the first boys' soccer championship. Drue's coaching experiences mirror his dedication to achieving success for his clients. Drue commented on the years he spent coaching, “All of these years were some of the best of my life and I got to spend them with the best people, coaches, and some of the best athletes to come through our community. I owe so much to my grandpa and I miss him every day! He taught me, there are only 2 reasons you don’t do something, either you don’t know how, or you don’t want to do it. I also can’t thank Coach Dagostine enough, he was there for me when a lot of others were not and taught me a lot over the years. I am so grateful to call him a friend. And to my uncle, Lance Sutherland, for believing that I was the right choice to be part of his team for all those years.”

Drue relates coaching to his career as a REALTOR this way, “You really consider yourself part of the team just like you consider yourself a part of your client’s team and always work as hard as you can for the best possible outcome.”
