Ty Steorts: A Champion’s Dedication to Cross Country and Track

Ty Steorts, a senior at Hurricane High School, has spent years dedicating himself to the sport of running. He lives in the Woodclyffe Chase neighborhood with his parents, Jason and Sara Steorts. His older brother, Chase, is attending Marshall University in the Aviation Program. Ty’s passion for running began with his mother’s encouragement.
“My mom was the reason I started running. She ran in college and encouraged me to give it a shot. I wasn’t sure at first, but from the moment I started, I fell in love with the sport. I’ve been running ever since!” Ty shared with Stroll Hurricane.
Ty has been running competitively since the sixth grade. Over the years, he also played basketball and competed in mountain biking, but running remained his true passion. His dedication has led to major accomplishments, including earning five All-American titles—two in cross country and three in track. He has also claimed six state championships: three in cross country and three in track, competing in the 3200m and 1600m events. TY is a
Two-time Gatorade Player of the Year in Cross Country for the state of West Virginia.
One of Ty's most influential figures has been his coach, Jonathan Fee. “Coach Fee has had a huge impact on my career. His knowledge of the sport and dedication to training are unmatched, and he’s always been there to guide me through challenges.” Another key influence has been Nick Kennedy, a former Hurricane runner who competes at Ohio University. “
Ty’s favorite running memory is winning his first-ever state mile title during his junior year of track. “I had my heart set on that race all season, and being able to push through and come out on top was a moment I’ll never forget.”
One of the things Ty values most about his team at HHS is their close bond. “We’re like a family. There’s never any drama, and we always find a way to have fun—even during tough practices. Those laughs and good times have made all the hard work worth it.”
Through running, Ty has learned valuable life lessons. “Running has taught me a lot, but if I had to sum it up in three words, I’d say: dedication, hard work, and consistency. Nothing about this sport comes easy. Success takes commitment every single day—even on the days when you don’t feel like running. Those are the days that make the biggest difference.”
After graduation, Ty will be attending the University of Tennessee, where he will continue competing in cross country and track while pursuing degrees in business and finance. “I’m looking forward to competing at the next level and seeing how much I can continue to grow as an athlete and a student.”
“If I could give one piece of advice to young athletes just starting, it would be to enjoy the journey. There will be days when it’s tough, but focus on the friendships you make and the experiences you gain. Those moments will stay with you long after the races are over.”
We are proud to have TY as part of our community.
