Rooted in the Hurricane Community: Meet the McClellan Family

On Olde Orchard Drive in Hurricane, the McClellan family has created a home rooted in love, community, and meaningful traditions. Trent and Hope McClellan, along with their children—Morgan, Sloane, and Zane—have called Hurricane home for the past 15 years, and their connection to the area runs deep.
Trent, who is the Manager of Contractor Safety at TC Energy, grew up in Ripley and graduated from Marshall. Hope is originally from the small town of West Unity, Ohio, where her parents still reside. She attended a small community college in Ohio. Fate brought them together when Trent was working on a project near Hope’s hometown and happened to meet her at a local restaurant. "The rest," as Hope fondly puts it, "is history." They were married on the beaches of Sanibel Island, Florida, in a destination wedding on June 5, 2004, and this year marks their 21st anniversary.
Together, they’ve built a life centered around their faith, their children, and a deep love of the community. Hope serves as the Elementary Director at River Ridge Church.
The family is very community supportive, Hope explains, “Over the years, I have been involved in different groups. Moms Club and Mops when my kids were younger, and eventually helped lead both groups. I was part of the team that helped start Mom Prom, now Glam Gala. Over the years, I have spent time volunteering at West Teays Elementary, where all 3 of our kids attended. When the girls were little, we started helping with Backpack Buddies packing day, and we have done that every year we have been in town. We even have Trent and Zane join us now. It’s one of our favorite community events. We are also involved with our church River Ridge where we help with community events such as Tale & Trail and Big Kick soccer Camp. If anyone is looking for a church to call home, we welcome you to come to River Ridge Church Teays Valley.”
Their children are involved in a variety of activities that reflect the family’s values and energy. Morgan, a senior at Hurricane High School, plays volleyball for both the school and Vantage Volleyball Club. She’s a member of the National Honor Society, the prom committee, the environmental club, and Helping Paws. Sloane, a sophomore, shares her sister’s passion for volleyball and is involved in FCA, student Bible study, and Ridge Kids ministry at River Ridge Church. Zane, a sixth grader at Hurricane Middle, loves basketball, fishing, camping, riding four-wheelers, and spending summer weeks in Ohio with his grandparents. He and his grandfather have a fishing trip planned to Cave Run Lake in Kentucky.
The McClellans cherish their time together and keep strong family traditions. Christmas is always hosted at their house, complete with the same breakfast casserole baking while gifts are opened. “When we started having kids, we told our families we wouldn’t travel for Christmas,” Hope told Stroll Hurricane. “Now it’s our tradition to celebrate at home and open our doors to everyone.”
Dinner is another important daily ritual. “We cook most nights and always try to eat around the dinner table,” Hope shared. “It’s a time to connect and catch up, and it's my favorite time of the day. We even have a sign that says ‘No Phone Zone.’” On warm evenings, the family enjoys dining on their porch, savoring both the food and the time together.
They also love to travel, especially to the beach, particularly to any Caribbean Island or Gulf Coast, Florida beach.  Each year, the family decides whether to revisit a favorite spot or try somewhere new. “We’re trying a new Florida beach this summer, and we are already planning a cruise for next June,” Hope said.
When it comes to college football, things get lively in the McClellan household. Hope is a lifelong Michigan fan—a tradition she shared with her mom, aunt, cousin, and grandmother every Saturday growing up. Trent, on the other hand, is a proud WVU supporter. Their kids? They cheer for both.
Another key member of the McClellan family is Ginger, their sweet family dog who may already be familiar to Stroll Hurricane readers; she was previously featured and continues to bring energy and joy to their home.
Whether it’s volunteering through River Ridge Church, playing pickleball as a family, or just relaxing by the fire in winter, the McClellans know how to blend fun, faith, and family. “We love the small-town charm of Hurricane,” Hope said. “It’s more than just a place to live—it’s a community we love and proudly call home.”
