Hope Valley residents Ted Smith (CEO) and Bill Hoover (CFO) represent the third generation of family ownership and operation of Hillcrest Convalescent Center. Founded
in 1951, Hillcrest was the first certified Skilled Nursing facility in North Carolina.
As Ted explains, “In many ways Hillcrest is a perfect reflection of the major changes in
senior care over the past seven decades. Today, older adults enjoy a much longer and
better-quality life than ever before, and we’re proud to have been at the forefront,
leading the evolution of specialized senior care and serving more than 50,000 of the
Triangle’s finest families during the past 70 years.”

In 1951, RDU Airport didn’t have a terminal, Research Triangle Park was only an idea,
Harry Truman was President, and the Triangle community’s population was just under
150,000. Today that number has grown to well over 2,000,000 and Hillcrest – the senior
care provider continually owned by the same families under the original name for the
longest time in our community – mirrors the evolution in senior care with comparable changes in their expanded and enhanced capabilities.

Bill describes, “Today our full range of senior care facilities and services has grown to include after-hospital rehabilitation, outpatient physical therapy, care in your home, as well as assisted living and traditional 24/7 skilled nursing in one of our beautiful facilities in Durham or Raleigh. High-quality Hillcrest staff provide our signature Elegant Care. More than just a convenience, having all the senior care services in one resource means less stress, better coordination, better outcomes, and most importantly, staying in your home longer, for a better quality of life.”

Getting the care you need without having to move includes aging in place in the comfort
of your own home, with personal care services, help with medication management,
assistance with household chores, meal preparation, and companionship. If you need
outpatient therapy, enjoy exceptional one-on-one physical therapy in a beautiful setting,
conveniently located in the At Home Shopping Center across from The Fresh Market.
Inpatient rehab and residential care are available at both Hillcrest Durham and Hillcrest
Raleigh. All services at all locations feature Elegant Care which has been a tradition at
Hillcrest Durham for more than 70 years.
