The Wargo Family
Welcome to the June issue of Stroll Historic Brookhaven! This month, we celebrate fathers. Our cover family, the Gipsons, represents two generations working together and both living in Historic Brookhaven. John and Tess have lived in the neighborhood for 44 years. Their oldest son Jay and his wife Laurie moved in as newlyweds and raised three kids here. Read about their favorite family traditions, The Gipson Company which now employs three generations of Gipsons, and more.
Our Precious Pet is a Red Golden who loves people, food, and sitting on his front porch. Learn about Murphy Hall’s sensitive side and the blankie often at his side.
This month’s Landmarks column takes a look at the history of the land that lies within the borders of Historic Brookhaven. Discover how and when the acreage passed from the Creek Indians to a family from South Carolina to the Stovalls, for whom Stovall Boulevard is named.
If you’re looking for a worthy cause to support, consider Georgia CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), which trains volunteers to assist and advocate for children in foster care. The organization recently held its annual fundraising lunch with lots of Historic Brookhaven residents in attendance.
This issue also offers: a recipe from Nancy Jiang for buckwheat hazelnut flourless cake, the perfect Father’s Day treat; coverage of the Historic Brookhaven Neighborhood Association general meeting; a piece on a neighborhood girls night out that included advice from resident nutritionist Mary Virginia Coffman; lessons in mahjong from the Ladies of Historic Brookhaven Social Club’s latest meeting; and so much more.
Here's to wishing all the fathers in Historic Brookhaven, including my husband Joe, a most Happy Father’s Day! And as always, send me an email and tell me what’s going on in your life, on your street, with your family and friends. You can reach me at lgwargo@aol.com.
Happy reading!
Best,
Lisa Wargo
