Meet the Webbs, Rebecca, Den, Whit, Wyler, and West

Food, Friends, and Fun Keep this Busy Family Going

When Rebecca and Den Webb met 20 years ago, they were with friends at a University of Georgia football game in Athens despite neither being an alum. They learned that their alma maters, Texas Christian University (TCU) for Rebecca and Vanderbilt University for Den, were playing the following weekend and made a bet over the game’s outcome. When TCU took the day, Den reached out to Rebecca and said, “a bet’s a bet.” He offered her a drink at Treehouse Lounge before washing her car and the two started dating after that.

Now, Rebecca and Den live on Hunters Brook Court with their three sons Whit (15), Wyler (13), and West (10) and their three-year-old mini Goldendoodle Widget. Rebecca is marketing director at Kyndryl (a technology company spun out of IBM) and Den is a partner and land-use attorney at Smith Gambrell Russell Law Firm.

The Webbs moved to Historic Brookhaven as a family in 2019, but for Den it was a return to the neighborhood he grew up in. Den’s parents, Ann and Denny Webb, moved to 3810 Club Drive in 1972 and lived there until 10 years ago. Den attended Christ the King School and then Marist, and rode his bike to Capital City Club (CCC) as a child. Now, his boys live close enough to walk or ride bikes to CCC, and Whit and Wyler attend Marist. (West is still at St. Martin’s Episcopal School.) Moving to Historic Brookhaven had been a goal for Rebecca and Den.

Whether in their home in Historic Brookhaven or their prior abode of 13 years in Meadowbrook in Sandy Springs, homecooked meals have always played an important role in the Webb family’s life. Rebecca cooks dinner almost every night. She loves trying new recipes and will often post her new finds on Facebook, something she started doing during Covid and has continued much to her friends’ delight. “I feel that cooking at home and entertaining is falling by the wayside with each new generation,” she says. Every Saturday morning, she sits down with a cup of coffee, clips recipes from her magazines, and plans the week’s meals.

Rebecca says she had to learn to cook. Her parents divorced in 1975 and her mom worked, leaving little time for cooking meals. When at her father and stepmother’s house for weekends, the family always sat down to dinner at 6 p.m. and ate a balanced meal.  Rebecca replicated that with her mother. Rebecca says by the fifth grade she was in charge of making spaghetti. She loves decorating cakes, and started picking up that skill in third grade. By the seventh grade, she was baking pies with her grandmother’s pie crust recipe. “I would go to a friend’s house and make a pie,” she says.

As well as entertaining, Rebecca enjoys planning events and fixing things around the house. She hosts an annual Christmas party and invites folks from all different aspects and times of her life. “Once a friend, always a friend,” she says. At Kyndryl, she plans lunches and happy hours so employees can meet and socialize – not as part of her job, but because it’s fun. And, she is just as passionate about sharing her fix-it advice as she is her recipes.

She was born in Miami and lived there until 1980, when she moved to Texas with her mom. After high school, Rebecca moved onto TCU and majored in journalism, advertising, and public relations. She has maintained her college connections since graduating in 1993, serving for years as the president of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority’s junior alumnae and also as president of the TCU Atlanta Alumni Association twice, the first time 20 years ago and once again this year. She also enjoys playing tennis and volunteering in her sons’ classrooms, and is helping to chair the neighborhood’s new Ladies of Historic Brookhaven Social Club.

Den was born in Atlanta and attended Vanderbilt University for his undergraduate degree (BA in English). After graduation, he moved to London and worked for a marine cargo insurance underwriter in Lloyd’s of London. When returning to the United States, he attended law school at Mercer University. He enjoys exercising, playing golf and ping pong, working in the yard, swimming, and spending time on Lake Rabun. He has maintained his childhood friendships, including with West Brookhaven Drive resident Alfie Means and Josh Cobb, who lives on Mabry Road. In fact, Josh was there in Athens when Rebecca and Den met.

Like their parents, the Webb boys are active. West plays baseball at Murphy Candler park and basketball through the YMCA. He also participates in Catapult Acting Studios for acting classes. Whit and Wyler both play sports at Marist.

The Webb’s favorite traditions involve food. Each year for Thanksgiving, they merge their families together and serve dinner to 15. On a regular basis, they eat out at a restaurant every Friday night. Despite her love of cooking, Rebecca says it’s a nice break.

Den and Rebecca love living in Historic Brookhaven. They are happy to be close to their kids’ schools and the Capital City Club, where they are members. They like the treed streets and lots. Rebecca calls the neighborhood a hidden gem among a busy city. For Den, the walkability and “bike-ability” of the neighborhood are big pluses. “You can create one-, two-, and three-mile loops, all without having to get on a busy road,” he notes.
