HEAD = HBNA’s Cocktail Party Brings Out Residents

On Sunday evening April 19, the Historic Brookhaven Neighborhood Association (HBNA) invited new neighbors and all residents to an adult-only cocktail party at the Capital City Club. The two-hour event drew over 100 residents.

Rather than hosting its traditional spring general meeting or repeating last year’s family Spring Fling park event, the HBNA decided to create a casual get together with cocktails and light bites. The hope was to engage more neighbors in a totally fun environment. Based on attendance, the HBNA met its goal.

According to HBNA board member Emily Hyde, many new neighbors turned out for the event. HBNA board members mingled with the crowd and greeted newcomers. In a departure from past spring gatherings, there was no formal program or speech.

The HBNA will return to a more businesslike atmosphere at the Fall Annual Meeting on Thursday, October 15, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event will be held in the Brookhaven City Centre. Be on the lookout for HBNA emails with more details.

HEAD = Brookhaven Bible Study Wraps Up Year

The Brookhaven Women’s Bible Study, which meets each Thursday at 8 a.m. at St. James United Methodist Church, wrapped up its year with a May brunch at the Capital City Club. The group’s roster includes about 65 women who are mostly current or former residents of Historic Brookhaven and their friends. They follow a school-year calendar.

The Bible study is facilitated by East Brookhaven Drive resident Suzy Brister. This year, the group studied a variety of books, including The Armor of God by Priscilla Shirer, a Lenten study ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus, Grateful on gratitude to God in all things, and Emmanuel by Ruth Cho Simons.

The women also invite guest speakers. During the 2025-6 season, they heard from Elam Ministries, which works to strengthen and expand Christianity in Iran, and Mission Take Heart, a ministry serving persecuted Christians in the Middle East and Africa.

Community service plays a big role in the Bible study. The group filled 60 boxes with toys, school supplies, and hygiene items for Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child; stuffed Easter Eggs for the children of Cross Cultural Ministries in Chamblee; hosted a Palm Sundy Outreach program for international students; collected kitchen and other home items for BCM Georgia’s Welcome Home Kits; and participated in the Kind30 challenge to perform acts of kindness every day in October.

The women often attend local events together. Among this year’s activities were the Beacon of Hope Gala with guest speaker Tim Tebow, One Lamb Initiative’s mental wellness summit with keynote speaker Kay Warren, and Chastain Horse Park’s Brunch at the Barn for equine therapy programs. For next year, the Brookhaven Women’s Bible Study’s activities include an October retreat at the Heritage Retreat Center in Crawfordville, GA.

The group is non-denominational. Historic Brookhaven women of all faiths are welcome. Regular meetings resume in September, although the women will read two books and gather twice over the summer to discuss them. The first book is Theo of Golden.
