STROLL HB asks Liz, the passionate co-founder of Buckhead Mahjong Club about being in the game. With over two decades of Mahjong experience, and a deep love for the game, Liz specializes in teaching American Mahjong as well as facilitating private parties, corporate events, NMJL style tournaments, charitable fundraisers, and retreats anywhere in GA and the Palm Beach area. Since starting, she's taught hundreds of new players and loves to help friends learn or improve their MAHJ game!
SHB: What prompted you to start this business?
Liz: People kept asking us to teach them how to play Mahjong. We saw an amazing opportunity to educate and build an incredible Mahjong Community in Atlanta.
SHB: Describe what your company does?
Liz: We specialize in teaching American Mahjong as well as facilitating private parties, corporate events, NMJL style tournaments, charitable fundraisers, and retreats.
SHB: Anything extraordinary or unique that your company does?
Liz: BMC has played a pivotal roll in revitalizing the Mahjong scene in Atlanta. We have successfully taught thousands of people how to play mahjong and we host some of the city’s most coveted mahjong events.
SHB: What advice can you offer to other female business owners?
Liz: Don’t be afraid to act on an idea. Whether you start small or jump into the deep end of the pool, life is too short to sit around and wonder if it’s going to work out or not. Second, always trust your instinct.
SHB: How did you decide on this industry and what events led up to where you are now?
Liz: I began my journey at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Launched my career at Morgan Stanley, in Private Net Worth. From there, I headed to the West Coast, exploring the tech world across both hardware and software. Eventually, I returned to New York and made a bold pivot into the fashion industry—all while staying true to my passion for sales. I’ve always thrived in sales because it comes naturally to me—I'm energized by people and driven by meaningful connections.
I traded in my corporate goals to take on my most meaningful role yet: CEO of the Liu Crew. As the children began to leave “the nest” I picked up a new hobby – Mahjong! Along the way, I saw the incredible need for mahjong mentors and the opportunity to help people reconnect after the isolation of the covid years. So, I co-founded the Buckhead Mahjong Club.
SHB: What section of town is your business?
Liz: We are Atlanta based; teaching all over the city and beyond (GA, FL, NY)
SHB: Where did you grow up?
Liz: Garden City, NY
SHB: Tell us about your family?
Liz: I am married to my wonderful husband, Jeffrey Liu. We have four children ages 17-25 and two beloved dogs Fannie and June.
SHB: What are your hobbies and interests?
Liz: Mahjong, food & wine, travel, dogs, and a binge worthy show!
