SUBHEAD = 1/Meet the Shaifers

Adam and Cathy Shaifer joke that despite 16 years in the neighborhood, their French Bulldogs Chubb and Boss are more well-known than they or their sons (Jack, Frank, and Baer). The pups sit in the Bellaire/Club Drive home’s side yard, awaiting passersby. The Shaifers enjoy time together at Capital City Club, their house on Lake Oconee, and skiing.

SUBHEAD = 2/Bella, the “Wigglin” Aussie

Bella, the Whatley’s three-and-a-half year old Australian Shepherd, “goes crazy wiggling” when her human siblings come home from college. Bella is always ready to go, including out for coffee. If Paul or Kea head to Starbucks, Dunkin, or Chick-fil-A, Bella goes along and enjoys a pup cup. When Paul makes coffee at home, he makes her a homemade pup cup.

SUBHEAD = 3/Before the Hedges

The 20-foot-plus hedges that border the Capital City Club golf course were not always a neighborhood hallmark. The hedges were planted in 1985 as part of a security measure, particularly to keep out teenagers who had been doing wheelies on the greens. The tiny plants were installed between concrete columns that connected chains to create a fence.

SUBHEAD = 4/Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookies for Valentine’s Treat

Resident Nancy Jiang brough back organic Guatemalan macadamia nuts and Italian dark chocolate from her 2023 travels. The two rich ingredients inspired her to create a recipe for Chocolate Macadamia Nut cookies. It took eight tries to get the recipe right. She suggests filling heart-shaped cookie cutters with the dough for a Valentine’s Day treat.

SUBHEAD = 5/All It Takes is Simple Hospitality

When Anna Hough left her public relations and marketing career at Home Depot to stay home with her kids, she never imagined she would help her mother market her first book, Simple Hospitality. When the book was published, resident Anna dusted off her business and marketing skills and went to work. What is hospitality? Showing kindness to others, says Anna.
