The Princess and the Donkey

The Breens’ Doodles Provide Endless Love, Laughs

When the Breen family got their standard labradoodle Daisy, they thought her calm and elegant personality was normal for doodle breeds. Then three years later they added Charlie, a miniature golden doodle, to their Mabry Road household and found out that wasn’t true.

“He showed up like a tornado,” says Liz of the now nine-year-old pup. “The funniest part was Daisy immediately stepped into the ‘mom’ role, just watching him like, ‘This is my life now.’”

While Charlie runs around on what the family calls his “squirrel patrol missions,” Daisy calmly observes. “It’s like watching a supermodel babysit a cartoon character,” Liz says.

Daisy is 12 years old and weighs about 50 pounds. She has long legs and an elegant appearance. “She’s like the Heidi Klum of doodles,” Liz says. Daisy is also protective and loving. When someone comes to the door, Daisy stands sideways and in front of Liz in a protective manner.

Meanwhile, Charlie chases squirrels and chipmunks and keeps the family laughing at his antics. He is so loud and goofy that the Breens joke he has donkey energy. While he looks like a little teddy bear, Charlie has become the Breens’ security system. “Charlie is a little dog with such a loud, high-pitched bark that you just want to let the robber in because Charlie is so loud,” Liz says.

Both dogs are apricot in color and came from a farm in Ohio. When choosing names, all family members had a say, including a veto. The pups are perceptive and snuggly. If Daisy is snuggling Liz on the sofa, Charlie will jump up and love on Daisy, trying to get the other dog’s attention.

Charlie and Daisy are spoiled, given all sorts of attention, and treated like humans. Charlie sleeps in Liz and husband John’s bed. Daisy sleeps in her own bed on the floor next to Liz. They constantly get treats and walks around the neighborhood or to the park. “They are always front of mind,” says Liz.

She notes that Charlie and Daisy are the perfect balance. “Daisy brings the calm and class; Charlie brings the chaos and comedy,” Liz says. “They’ve completely changed our home in the best way. Life is just better – with more love, more fun, and more personality.”
