Getting to Know Evelyn & Sadie Suarez

Hilltop’s welcoming spirit has made neighbors, Evelyn and Sadie Suarez feel right at home, and it’s easy to see why. When asked what people often misunderstand about them, both girls pause before answering. “I feel like lots of people are very understanding here,” Evelyn says. Little sister, Sadie, agrees, noting that the Hilltop community has always felt open and accepting.

Their family moved here from New Orleans five years ago and both attended Carson Elementary just walking distance from home. Evelyn began middle school last year and has since grown comfortably into life as a sixth grader. Sadie is now finding her own stride as a fourth grader.

If there’s one thing they wish people asked them more often, it’s about what they enjoy. Evelyn loves talking about sports and her hobbies, especially because “it’s fun for other people to know what you like, and for you to know what other people like.” That curiosity and openness reflects how both girls approach their friendships and community.

Evelyn is especially proud of learning to play basketball, something she’s worked hard at and truly enjoys. Sadie is proud of her dedication to ballet. “I’ve been very committed to it,” she says. It has remained a big part of her life since their move from Louisiana. In fact, it is even her idea of a perfect day.

For both girls, being a good friend means being loyal and listening, especially when someone has had a hard day. They believe the best way to help is simple but meaningful: learn to listen attentively, encourage talking through feelings, and most importantly, “be there.”

What makes Hilltop feel like home? “It’s very safe and comfortable,” they say. Favorite local spots include Robinson Park (easily accessible by foot)—Sadie’s top choice—and for Evelyn, Park Burger and High Point Creamery. It’s clear that for Evelyn and Sadie Suarez, home is about connection, kindness, and feeling supported—values that define the neighborhood they love.
