Rooted in Tradition, Growing in Community: Meet the Patels of Highland Woods
Evan with Cris Nelson, owner of National Karate
In 2023, the Patel family moved from Bartlett to Highland Woods, choosing to build a new Pulte home in a neighborhood that offered a stronger sense of community and access to the D301 school district. Since settling in, they’ve grown to appreciate the people, connections, and friendly atmosphere that make Highland Woods such a special place to live.
Raj, a Senior Visual Designer with a Master’s Degree in Media Design from Full Sail University, who has worked with respected companies like BMW, KPMG, and Alliant Credit Union. His wife, Janki, is a Senior Analyst and graduate of Wayne State University. The two met online—he was living in Schaumburg, Illinois, and she was in Michigan—and have built a life focused on family, growth, and meaningful experiences.
Their sons, Evan (13) and Aryan (9), are both involved in National Karate of South Elgin. Evan is a second-degree black belt, a strong student performing high school-level calculus, and an excellent swimmer who hopes to become a lifeguard at the community pool. He’s also started mowing lawns for a few neighbors, showing initiative and responsibility. Aryan, a purple belt, is known for his outgoing personality and love for spending time outdoors with friends.
The Patel family enjoys celebrating their Indian traditions with others in the neighborhood. Holi, Diwali, Navratri, Christmas, New Year’s, and the Fourth of July are all special occasions in their home—offering both cultural pride and opportunities to connect with others.
In the summer months, the family spends much of their time outside—hiking, swimming, and biking are favorite pastimes. Their boys enjoy tennis and volleyball at the courts, and the family often visits local favorites like Sammy’s Mexican Grill and the Milk House for evening ice cream runs.
Looking back on their decision to move, they agree it was the right choice. “The best part of living here is the people,” they said. “Our neighbors have become friends, and living here feels like being part of a larger community that truly cares.”
