Building Sweet Success, One Cookie at a Time: Michael Amato

Mike and his co-owners of Italian Bakery
For the past 15 years, Michael Amato has proudly called Highland Woods home. What started as a place to raise a family has grown into a community filled with friendships, unforgettable moments, and lifelong bonds. “We’ve made so many great memories with neighbors,” Michael shares. “Our kids have met their closest friends here, and those friendships have truly shaped who they are today.”
Michael is the perfect example of someone who blends family, business, and community with equal dedication. During the week, he works from home Monday through Thursday as a Senior Technology Manager at Alight Solutions—a role he’s held for over 22 years. But Friday through Sunday, he trades technology for flour and frosting at The Italian Bakery, Inc., a beloved family-owned bakery located in Addison.
Originally established in 1981 by Michael’s father and his partner, The Italian Bakery has long been known for its authentic Italian cookies, pastries, specialty cakes, focaccia, and breads. When his father approached retirement, he asked Michael and his brothers, Matteo and Fortunato, if they wanted to carry on the legacy. Along with longtime family friend Salvatore, they stepped in to take the reins. “I didn’t even know I liked baking,” Michael laughs. “But I jumped in, learned from our team, and now I absolutely love it.”
The bakery serves both retail and wholesale clients, providing sweets to delis, banquet halls, park districts, and more. “What makes it worth it is seeing the smile on a customer’s face when they pick up a cake or dessert,” Michael says. “It’s instant gratification compared to the long implementations I manage at Alight.”
The holidays are the bakery’s busiest—and most rewarding—season. “Christmas and Easter are something special,” Michael shares. “Seeing customers line up around the building, sometimes waiting over an hour for their favorite treats, is humbling. It tells us we're doing something right, and they keep coming back year after year.”
Beyond the bakery and corporate world, Michael finds time to serve the local community. He spent years coaching all three of his children—Antonio, Stefano, and Mika—in soccer at the Elgin Sports Complex. The Amato family is also active at Saint Thomas More Church, where Michael’s wife Tracey and the kids volunteer weekly. Tracey, a former teacher, is now a personal trainer at Higher Level Fitness in St. Charles and shares Michael’s commitment to giving back.
After long days and packed weekends, Michael still finds peace in Highland Woods. “I love this neighborhood,” he says. “I can go for a five-mile run, take a swim, hit the gym, or just walk with my wife and kids. Everything I need is right here. Some people dream about living in a community like this—we get to live it every day.”
Looking ahead, Michael hopes to expand The Italian Bakery and possibly bring a location closer to Elgin. His advice to aspiring entrepreneurs? “Just go for it. I didn’t know anything about baking four years ago, and now I’m part of a thriving business. If you’re serious, reach out—I’m happy to help.” To learn more, visit italian-bakery.com.
