When Love Becomes a Legacy

Every so often, someone in this community shares a story that makes me stop in my tracks. That’s exactly what happened when a local business owner asked if I’d ever been to Bliss & Fish—and then added, “You know it’s owned by a Hidden Lake neighbor, right?” That was all the encouragement I needed. I made it a point to visit, introduce myself, and learn more.

Walking into Bliss & Fish for the first time, I was simply excited to connect with a fellow Hidden Lake neighbor. What I didn’t expect was to be treated like royalty. Shadia Zamlut welcomed me as though I were a lifelong friend. Within minutes, she was sending out an incredible spread of Mediterranean dishes, each one rich with flavor, warmth, and history. As we sat together and she shared her journey, I quickly realized this wasn’t just a restaurant—this was a living story of heart, healing, and heritage.

Shadia and her husband, Mahmud, moved to Hidden Lake in 2021 with their four children—Hassan (16), Laila (14), Lara (12), and Yusha (11). They had always dreamed of living on a lake, and Hidden Lake became the place where that dream finally rooted itself.

But Bliss & Fish … that dream began long before 2021.

Shadia’s life has always had threads of the restaurant world woven into it. Growing up, her family owned restaurants, and she spent countless hours surrounded by the sounds, smells, and rhythms of the kitchen. She watched her father and uncle pour their hearts into serving others—though she never imagined she’d one day follow in their footsteps. Life clearly had other plans.

Her roots also run deep through Lebanon, where her family has a villa in the breathtaking mountain town of Aley. Every year, they return to reconnect with loved ones, tradition, and the land itself. One of her most cherished memories is taking her children to visit their olive tree lands, watching the harvest unfold. Her kids were mesmerized—seeing olives plucked straight from trees their ancestors tended and understanding the meaning behind the oil on their table. That moment planted a seed that would later grow into a calling.

Before Bliss & Fish existed, Shadia created Mediterranean Gold, importing olive oil directly from those family lands. The business wasn’t born from a desire to become an entrepreneur—it was born from a mother’s heart. When her son was diagnosed with autism and IBS, she immersed herself in research, determined to help him experience a better quality of life.

And then, something remarkable happened.

Her own father—drawing from generations of ancestral knowledge—reminded her of the healing potency of the olive oil from their homeland. He shared with her the traditions, the purity, and the natural benefits that people in their country had relied on for centuries. Trusting his wisdom, she incorporated their olive oil into her son’s diet, and slowly, they began to see him thrive.

That moment changed everything.

She had unearthed something powerful—not just a product, but a gift from her heritage that had the ability to heal. It became the foundation for the legacy she wanted to build for his future. And when she felt the pull to open a restaurant, she turned back to the people who taught her what hospitality truly meant—her father and uncle. She enrolled them in the endeavor, and together, they poured their family’s love, tradition, and recipes into what would become Bliss & Fish.

As she spoke, I felt every word deeply. My own sister has been on a similar road for more than a decade, navigating autism, epilepsy, inflammation, and the pursuit of solutions that help her son thrive. Sitting with Shadia, I recognized that same fierce devotion—that sacred fire that ignites in a mother’s heart when she decides to fight for her child. It created an instant bond between us.

Mediterranean Gold eventually expanded into something even bigger—Bliss & Fish. Born in May 2025, the restaurant became a place where everything Shadia believes in could take form: real food, made with love, rooted in heritage, created with ingredients that nourish both body and soul. Every dish is prepared with the same olive oil that once helped heal her son. It’s a piece of Lebanon, a piece of her heart, poured generously onto every plate.

What makes Bliss & Fish different isn’t just the food. It’s the intention behind it. It’s the story woven into every bite, the devotion in the kitchen, the heritage in every flavor. It’s a restaurant built on heart, family, and faith.

Shadia’s most memorable moment came on opening day. She described standing at the entrance with her family—her son at her side, her children surrounding her—as she cut the ribbon through tears. “After everything I had been through caring for my son and dreaming about this moment for so long, I was overwhelmed with emotion,” she told me. That day marked not just the start of a business, but the fulfillment of a dream born from love and perseverance.

Running Bliss & Fish has transformed her life. It gave her a renewed sense of purpose after years devoted to her son’s care. It brought her family even closer—her kids help at the restaurant, they laugh together, they work together, and they’ve found their own sense of connection and community through it. Hidden Lake embraced them warmly, and she carries that gratitude with her every day.

Just before Thanksgiving, we hosted a restaurant review event at Bliss & Fish, and her generous heart was on full display again. She prepared a beautiful spread for her neighbors, shared her story with grace and strength, and created a night filled with connection and meaning. Those who attended walked away moved—just as I had been when I first met her.

And recently, that heart-led work was recognized in a very meaningful way. Bliss & Fish was honored as Pinckney Business of the Year, received recognition from the Greater Brighton Area Chamber of Commerce, and was presented with a State of Michigan proclamation—a reflection of what so many already know. Bliss & Fish is more than a restaurant. It is a gathering place. A space for neighbors to connect over Mediterranean food made with family-sourced olive oil, live local music, and shared moments that bring people together.

When asked what advice she’d offer others, Shadia kept it simple and profound: never give up on your dreams and trust that everything unfolds in its perfect time. “First trust God,” she shared. “His timing is always perfect. Success comes from heart, patience, and consistency. Surround yourself with good people, stay connected to your community, and never lose sight of why you started.”

Bliss & Fish is more than a restaurant. It’s a love story—of a mother, a family, a heritage, a healing journey, and a dream fulfilled.

And now, our community gets to be part of that story too.
