Gratitude for Our Past, Excitement for What’s Ahead

As we step into a brand-new year together, this January edition felt especially meaningful to put together. It’s filled with stories, memories, and moments that capture the heart of Hidden Lake — and at the center of it all is a tribute to a man whose presence shaped this neighborhood in ways big and small.
Our featured article honors the life and legacy of Jerry Mannarino, a neighbor whose kindness, generosity, and steadfast character left a mark on everyone lucky enough to know him. Jerry and his wife, Jan, have been an incredible part of what makes Hidden Lake so special. In fact, Jan was the very first neighbor I ever connected with here more than eight years ago, and her warmth, support, and genuine welcome — both then and again when Sophia arrived — meant more to me than she’ll ever know. Their family’s influence is woven into the fabric of this community, and I hope you take the time to read this heartfelt memoir.
This issue is also packed with festive recaps from a December to remember. Our Annual STROLL Shine & Share Cookie Exchange brought sweetness, sparkle, and so many creative displays that it deserves its own highlight reel. This cherished event was sponsored by our neighbor and STROLL sponsor, Misiel Conlen of Griffith Realty, whose support helped make the morning feel extra special.
The Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony — brought to life by the Social Committee and sponsored in part by them, STROLL Hidden Lake, and Legacy Painting Co. — once again turned the community parking lot into pure magic. And for those who couldn’t attend this year’s LACASA Gala, don’t miss the full recap inside. Hidden Lake showed up in a remarkable way.

This year’s Gala came to life thanks to the dedication of several of our very own neighbors: Judy and Bert Herzog (Bert is also one of our STROLL sponsors with EP Wealth Advisors) were named “Mr. and Mrs. LACASA Gala” in recognition of their presenting sponsorship and their decades-long commitment to the agency, where Judy serves on the Board of Directors. Mary Pittman served as this year’s Working Chair, devoting countless hours to ensure every detail was perfect, working closely with Carla O’Malley to gather sponsorships and auction items from across the community. And once again, Kate Lowry led the Décor Committee with her signature creativity and vision. LACASA has shared immense gratitude for every Hidden Lake neighbor who worked on, supported, promoted, or attended this beloved event.
We’re also shining a spotlight on one of our incredible sponsors, Szegi Haus K9 Solutions — a mother-daughter dog boarding and training team based right here in Brighton. Their passion, professionalism, and heart for their clients and animals have been invaluable, and we’re thrilled to share more about them in this issue.
This month’s Ask the Expert column features neighbor Brandon Lorenz of GameDay Men’s Health, offering insight into TRT and whether it may be a supportive option for you or someone you love.
As we head into 2026, I’m excited to continue bringing you the stories, faces, and moments that connect us. I would truly love to hear from you — who should we feature this year? A new neighbor? A newborn? An accomplished athlete? A beloved pet with a big personality? And what kinds of events would you love to attend?
Please reach out anytime. I can’t wait to keep creating these connections with you in the year ahead. Happy New Year, Hidden Lake!
Warmly,
