From the desk of John McKee

I hope everyone had a wonderful Fourth of July. It is hard to believe that we are already more than halfway through 2026.

As noted in the June issue of the Stroll, with school out for the summer, drivers should use extra caution throughout Heathrow. Many children are spending more time outdoors, so please observe posted speed limits and come to a complete stop at all intersections. Please also be especially mindful of children riding electric bikes and scooters, as they may move unexpectedly in and out of traffic. We have confirmed with Seminole County that these vehicles may be operated on the street when used safely. I know this message has been repeated, but it is an important one: parents are encouraged to speak with their children about riding e-bikes and e-scooters responsibly. Too often, news reports remind us of the serious injuries that can result when proper caution is not taken, not only to the rider, but to pedestrians as well.

Most residents are already aware of the wildlife in our area, but I want to take a moment to remind everyone that Heathrow is home to a variety of native animals. In addition to bears, coyotes, foxes, and bobcats have been seen in and around our community. Last year, a fox den with kits was found within one of our neighborhoods, and fox activity has again been reported this year. Florida wildlife officials have advised that red foxes are protected and cannot be trapped or relocated. They noted that creating a disturbance, such as flashing lights or music, may encourage them to move, although they may simply relocate elsewhere within Heathrow. While these animals can pose a risk to people, they can be especially dangerous to pets. Over the years, we have received several reports of missing pets, particularly cats. Please always keep a close watch on your pets.

If you are experiencing mosquito issues, the best course of action is to contact Seminole County Mosquito Control, a program of the Watershed Management Division within the Public Works Department. A technician can be sent to evaluate standing water in your area for larvae and provide treatment as needed. They can be reached at (407) 665-5542.
Please save the date of November 15 for the 2026 Funival.
