Kelly and Cromwell Schupp of Rail and Stile
For Hayes Barton residents Kelly and Cromwell Schupp, home is more than a place to live—it’s a canvas for creativity. After 17 years in the neighborhood, they still enjoy strolling past historic homes and stopping by local favorites like Crafty and Third Place. Behind the doors of their Raleigh workshop, they are making their mark on design, one piece of furniture at a time.
Kelly and Cromwell run Rail and Stile, a custom furniture studio, lacquer shop, and refinishing business that helps clients reimagine their interiors. What began nearly a decade ago as a hobby—sourcing and lacquering vintage furniture—has grown into a full-service studio specializing in building new pieces and upcycling heirlooms.
Their work spans woodworking, upholstery, and refinishing, blending vintage inspiration with modern functionality. Pieces are resized for today’s homes and updated with details like soft-close doors and drawers. Their Modern Ming Collection was recognized in Garden & Gun’s 2023 Made in the South Awards, and today Rail and Stile offers 12 collections that combine classic design with contemporary use.
Sustainability is central to their process. Their lacquer studio uses environmentally friendly, water-based finishes, and they take pride in giving mid-century and vintage furniture a second life.
Beyond their workshop, the Schupps support the community, especially The Green Chair Project, contributing to its annual Chairity fundraiser and the upcoming Curated for a Cause event in spring 2026.
Rail and Stile has a number of local clients, and has enjoyed helping neighbors get comfortable adding color and creativity into their homes. Their work ranges from bedroom furniture, bath vanities, dining room tables and storage to coastal-inspired pieces for beach homes, adding both beauty and personality to each space.
