Lotus Primary Care
Helping Healthcare Blossom on Cape Cod
For Dr. Matthew Libby, family medicine has always been about more than treating symptoms. It is about understanding each patient as an individual, meeting them where they are, and helping them work toward their own health goals in a way that is safe, realistic, and sustainable.
That philosophy is at the heart of Lotus Primary Care, Dr. Libby's Direct Primary Care practice in Brewster, serving both year-round and seasonal residents of Cape Cod.
A board-certified Family Physician, Dr. Libby has lived and practiced on Cape Cod since 2015. His training includes the Harvard/Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Fellowship in Primary Care Leadership, the Tufts/Greater Lawrence Family Health Center Residency in Family Medicine, and the University of New England Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
His approach combines conventional, evidence-based medicine with holistic, whole-person care. Lotus Primary Care provides preventive and wellness care, chronic disease management, prompt care for illnesses and injuries, Lifestyle Medicine, osteopathic treatment, and a variety of office procedures, including skin biopsies, joint injections, and uncomplicated laceration repairs.
Making Time for Patients
The Direct Primary Care model allows Dr. Libby to structure his practice around the patient-physician relationship rather than the demands of a traditional insurance-driven system.
Patients can see their own physician without long waits or rushed appointments, giving them the time and space to discuss what actually matters to them.
That difference has been especially meaningful for patients who arrive at Lotus Primary Care after difficult experiences elsewhere in the healthcare system.
“Many patients come to me after having had bad experiences in the healthcare system, and I am very sympathetic,” Dr. Libby says. “Being able to remove those insurance-driven barriers and distractions from my own practice has enabled me to get to know my patients much more deeply as individuals than ever before, because I now have the time.”
One patient, Stephen Briscoe of Larkin Gallery, describes his experience this way:
“The entire experience with Dr. Matthew Libby has been excellent. The quality of care, the degree of comfort are just terrific. He is kind, an excellent listener, thoughtful and resourceful and extraordinarily responsive. In a world where the patient is too often rushed through a visit, this practice offers something far better and far more valuable: time.”
From Healthcare Practice to Healthcare Advocacy
While many people know Dr. Libby as a family physician, fewer may be aware of his work advocating for healthcare reform.
Dr. Libby currently serves as Vice President of the Massachusetts Academy of Family Physicians. Through that role, as well as previous executive leadership positions in community health organizations, he has met with lawmakers at both the state and national levels to advocate for improvements to healthcare policy.
His advocacy work stems from the same concerns he sees in his practice every day: patients struggling to navigate a complicated system, physicians facing increasing administrative burdens, and barriers that can interfere with the delivery of timely, meaningful care.
For patients who ask what they can do about these broader problems beyond seeking out a concierge or Direct Primary Care physician, Dr. Libby encourages them to become advocates themselves.
“I recommend advocating on the local, state, or even national level for healthcare reform,” he says.
For Dr. Libby, improving healthcare isn't simply about creating a better experience inside his own office. It is also about working toward a system that serves patients and communities better as a whole.
The Lotus Takes Root
The name Lotus Primary Care reflects that larger vision.
The lotus flower grows from muddy water before emerging and blossoming. Dr. Libby sees the image as an apt metaphor for modern healthcare, which he believes has become increasingly “muddied” by third parties and complex systems positioned between patients and caregivers.
“I worked for many years to understand, navigate, and improve this system from within,” he explains. “But it has only continued to become more unsustainable.”
Eventually, he adopted the Direct Primary Care model with the vision of allowing truly person-centered primary healthcare to “blossom” on Cape Cod.
As an osteopathic physician, Dr. Libby can also incorporate Osteopathic Treatment into a patient's care when appropriate and when the patient is interested. This provides another dimension to Lotus Primary Care's whole-person approach.
A Practice Rooted in Community
Dr. Libby's commitment to community began long before opening Lotus Primary Care. He trained and worked in community health for more than a decade and remains deeply committed to community involvement and betterment.
Lotus Primary Care is actively working with local businesses to develop customized partnerships that can provide employees with access to high-quality primary and episodic care. The practice also offers a limited number of reduced-cost memberships for individuals and families who are economically disadvantaged.
Community connection extends beyond healthcare, too. Lotus Primary Care showcases local artists in its space and has provided a temporary home for the Brewster Chamber of Commerce while the Chamber searches for a new permanent location.
For Dr. Libby, these efforts are part of what it means to practice medicine in a community: not simply caring for people when they are sick, but contributing to the community's overall wellbeing.
Looking Ahead
As a new business, Lotus Primary Care is focused on sustainable growth while protecting the quality and personal connection that define the practice. Dr. Libby's vision includes eventually bringing additional clinicians into the practice to increase accessibility while maintaining its patient-centered approach.
Over time, he hopes Lotus Primary Care will become a staple of the Cape Cod community, with membership options available to people from a broad range of backgrounds and socioeconomic circumstances.
Outside of work, Dr. Libby enjoys cooking, hiking, camping, photography, and spending time with his three children and his partner.
At its heart, Lotus Primary Care is built around a simple idea: healthcare works better when there is enough time to listen, understand, and care for the whole person.
