For Tracey Smith, founding her own law firm wasn’t just a career move—it was a calling rooted in personal experience, compassion, and a deep desire to serve families during life’s most vulnerable moments. Since opening The Law Office of Tracey D. Smith, LLC in 2023, she has made it her mission to help individuals and families across Cape Cod plan for the future with clarity and confidence.

Originally from Connecticut, Tracey attended the University of Connecticut before moving to Boston for law school. After a decade in the city, she and her husband Ryan, who grew up on the Cape, decided to put down roots in Harwich in 2016. The couple welcomed their daughter, Antonie “Toni,” in 2020, and are proud pet parents to a yellow Labrador named Abigail. “Harwich truly feels like home,” says Tracey. “We’ve felt the strength of this community firsthand, especially after Toni was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia earlier this year. The outpouring of support has meant everything to us.”

Before launching her own firm, Tracey worked primarily in real estate law. While she appreciated the work, something was missing: connection. Estate planning gave her the chance to build relationships and offer guidance during pivotal life moments. “I started this firm to focus on what really matters—people,” Tracey shares. “I’ve seen both sides of estate planning. When my father passed away in 2021, my mother had everything in place. She was able to grieve without the burden of navigating paperwork or court proceedings. I want to give that peace of mind to others.”

Her practice offers comprehensive estate planning services, including wills, trusts, healthcare proxies, powers of attorney, HIPAA forms, living wills, and estate probate. But what truly sets her apart is her personalized, long-term approach. “I don’t just create documents. I build relationships. Life changes, and your plan should change with it. I want to be there to help make those adjustments when needed.”

Tracey is deeply committed to giving back to the Harwich community. She is a proud member of the Harwich Chamber of Commerce and regularly hosts free seminars to educate residents about the importance of estate planning. She can often be found at the Harwich Community Center, offering resources and answering questions.

“Education is everything. People don’t always realize the consequences of not having a plan or of using DIY legal documents that may not hold up. My role is to help families make informed, thoughtful decisions.”

Like many legal professionals, Tracey has seen the rise of AI and online legal platforms offering low-cost documents. But she cautions against cutting corners when it comes to something as important as your family’s future. “Most litigation I’ve seen in estate law comes from do-it-yourself documents,” she explains. “If your plan isn’t done properly, the Commonwealth decides what happens—including who raises your children. I work to ensure my clients have plans that actually work when they need them.”

With her practice growing, Tracey is excited to be hiring her first legal assistant and expanding her community outreach through additional seminars and events. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve this community. My goal is to be a resource and a trusted partner for local families, now and for years to come.”
