Hello, Poppy! Richmond’s Newest Celebrity Hippo

Poppy and Kristin

This spring, fellow Hallsley resident Kristin Crain and I took a visit to the Metro Richmond Zoo. The Zoo offers unforgettable experiences, especially with the chance to meet Poppy, the zoo's beloved pygmy hippopotamus. Born on December 9, 2024, to parents Iris and Corwin, Poppy quickly became a sensation, capturing the hearts of people worldwide. Her name was chosen through a global online poll, receiving over 100,000 votes from 165 countries.

Poppy made her public debut in the outdoor Hippo Haven habitat on March 28, 2025. Visitors can now observe her daily as she enjoys swimming and grazing alongside her mother. The habitat features an underwater viewing window, providing a close-up look at Poppy's playful antics.
For those seeking a more immersive experience, the zoo offers the "Poppy Pygmy Hippo Experience." This behind-the-scenes tour allows guests to don waders and step into the water near Iris and Poppy, separated by a safe barrier. Participants may have the opportunity to feed the hippos and learn about their behavior and conservation efforts from a zoo team member.
Pygmy hippos are an endangered species, with fewer than 2,500 individuals remaining in the wild. Poppy's birth is a significant contribution to conservation efforts, and her presence at the zoo helps raise awareness about the plight of her species.
Whether you're a local or visiting from afar, a trip to the Metro Richmond Zoo to see Poppy is both educational and heartwarming. Don't miss the chance to witness this adorable ambassador for her species in action.
