Imagine thousands of Scouts from across the country gathered around campfires, scaling climbing towers, paddling on lakes, testing their skills on mountain bike trails and forming friendships that will last a lifetime. Our daughters experienced this over the summer at Scouting America’s National Jamboree at Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia. But every Scout’s journey begins much closer to home.
Countering an all-digital childhood, Scouting America brings nature and adventure to kids. Scouting offers young people meaningful friendships, skill building, mentoring, service projects and opportunities to grow into confident, capable leaders. Whether learning first aid, hiking mountain trails, camping beneath a canopy of stars or working together to solve challenges, Scouts discover that some of life’s greatest lessons are learned outdoors and alongside others.
What Is Scouting America?
Scouting America serves youth from kindergarten through high school with age-appropriate programs that grow alongside them. Cub Scouts (ages 5–10) introduces boys and girls to outdoor adventures, hands-on activities, family fun and character-building experiences. Scouts BSA (ages 11–17) expands those opportunities through youth leadership, advanced outdoor skills, opportunities to earn merit badges, high-adventure experiences, community service and personal growth.
With trained adult volunteers, proven safety standards and flexible meeting schedules, Scouting America gives every young person a place to belong, build confidence and discover what they’re capable of.

Scouts do so much more than earn badges. They develop the following skills:
- Leadership & Responsibility — Planning campouts, leading meetings, mentoring younger Scouts, managing projects and making decisions.
