The Cove Charleston

Bringing Effortless, Higher-End Fashion to Daniel Island

Tell us a little background on you, your family, and your business and how you decided to open your store on DI.

My name is Britt Schmidt and my family and I moved to Charleston 2.5 years ago! My husband and I have four girls; twins who are 8, a 6-year-old and a 3-year-old. We also have 3 golden retrievers and 3 cats. We are from Santa Barbara, CA and I worked in the fashion industry there, as well as in Chicago, for years! I love all aspects of boutiques and have had the opportunity to experience them in all facets. To own a boutique, you really have to be in the right spot. If the market is oversaturated, it will be next to impossible to get the lines you want, not to mention customers! Daniel Island has several wonderful boutiques, but I saw a need for this kind of clothing boutique on our island.

What makes your business unique? Any special projects or offerings you can share with our community members?

The Cove Charleston sells higher-end clothing, accessories, & jewelry. To shop anywhere similar, customers had to go into Mt. Pleasant or downtown Charleston. The convenience factor is huge; to have a local boutique that carries lines people were previously shopping off-island or online for, not only saves time but allows them to invest in their community. The other perk is that I am part of this community! I understand DI culture, customers' clothing needs/wants, and I care about building relationships with clients.

Please share your goals and/or passions around owning The Cove Charleston.

My goal is to help women feel amazing in what they wear and to have timeless, quality items. I want them to be able to get a piece that is well made, that will last, and that can be worn a number of different ways. I also want getting dressed to be effortless; I don't want my customers to ever stand in front of the mirror and wonder if they look good or not, or not know how to wear a piece. I want women to be able to grab and go, knowing that it fits, that it is beautiful and they don't have to really think about it. My life can be chaotic with  4 kids and all the animals. I'm in survival mode a lot!  Knowing that I have effortless, quality clothes means I can look put together even when I'm putting out fires left and right. I want other women to be able to do the same, look effortless, feel beautiful, and have an opportunity to do it locally.
