High Country Fine Finishes
It was a summer break between semesters in college that David first picked up a paint brush. Located in the Castro District of San Francisco, the project involved flipping a rental unit in which a depressed, cigar smoking hoarder had previously lived for a decade or more. "The living conditions were just wretched-- smoke stains, cat filth, pans with solidified grease on the stove. I had never seen anything like that before," David says. "We de-greased, cleaned, primed, and painted every square inch of that place, including cabinets. With new appliances and fresh paint, it was an entirely different space. That's when I truly felt the transformational power of paint!" Now here in Denver, after 25 years of diligently honing skills and refining the craft, David runs High Country Fine Finishes, a painting business catering to affluent neighborhoods with historic homes.
As owner/operator, it is often David who is the man behind the brush. But with a team in place for larger projects, they take on jobs large and small, interior and exterior. "We like the older homes," he says. "Each one is unique with character and architectural details that you don't find in more modern houses. There is so much you can do with paint to restore beauty and original splendor." Specializing in Level V smooth wall finishes, trim restoration, cabinetry refinishing, and Farrow and Ball luxury paint, High Country Fine Finishes is a full service residential painting company that exhibits a high degree of both industry knowledge and mastery of the trade.
As part of the service sector, David considers the work he performs much more than just a mechanical duty. "It's about building relationships," he explains. "The majority of our work comes from word-of-mouth referrals and repeat business. That must mean we're doing something right," David comments, dryly. In a lot of contexts--painting a master bedroom, for example--there is a certain intimacy to this type of work. There is a lot of interpersonal interaction from the initial consultation, to the planning and scheduling, to the execution of the work. People pay a deposit for an intangible something that they haven't seen yet, so there is trust building involved. "It's about more than just a paint job. We help people manifest their vision and design goals, and we do it with enthusiasm and a cheerful attitude. So at the end of the day, it's about making people happy," says David. Now, in its sixth full year of operation, there's not one single dissatisfied customer.
Outside of his career, David is a devoted husband and father who enjoys many things typical of the Colorado lifestyle...biking, skiing, gardening, picnics, and outdoor adventures with his 5 year old son.
