Cruising down the Blue Danube River
"The Blue Danube", or "An der schönen blauen Donau" in German, refers to the river Danube, and the famous waltz written by Johann Strauss
"Hello" in Siberian
In April, Harriet and I had an unforgettable experience, cruising down the Danube River from Vienna, Austria to Bucharest, Romania, winding up in the Black Sea port of Constanta, Romania. What made the trip even more unforgettable was that it coincided with the Easter holidays, adding to the beauty of the trip, as we visited numerous incredible churches as well as beautiful city parks.
Our journey started with a long flight to Vienna, where the Viking agent greeted us and escorted us to the River Boat. The Viking River boats are especially enjoyable as they typically accommodate less than 200 people, affording the opportunity to make new friends. The Danube River is over 1700 miles long, stretching from the Black Forest of Germany to the Black Sea, crossed by numerous bridges, many of which connect two different countries. During the journey you also pass through several locks, many of which have hydroelectric facilities providing power to Eastern Europe. The locks are two chambered, allowing two-way traffic along the river.
Our first night in Vienna included a visit to the fabulous Wurstelprater Amusement Park in the city center. There are rides there for everyone’s tastes, including an enormous ferris wheel that Harriet and I rode. After departing Vienna, we visited Bratislava Slovakia, Budapest, Hungary, Novi Sad and Belgrade Serbia, Vidin and Pleven Bulgaria and finally Constantan and Bucharest Romania.
Throughout our journey it was so nice to hear the heartwarming stories of how things have changed since the local conflicts concluded, allowing free travel between countries and across those many beautiful bridges!! I wished that I had many more pages to fully portray and describe all of the amazing places we visited and sights that we saw, but hopefully these photographs will summarize a few of the amazing experiences we had.
