Jake Chandler - A rescue who found his forever family

Jake and his Kong Bone
Kirk and Peggy Chandler moved to Buffalo Creek in February 2023 from their home in Poetry to be closer to family in Forney. Wanting to downsize, the Chandlers went from 7 acres to a beautiful golf course lot in the Enclave. Of course, Jake, their sweet and beautiful brindle Boxer/Pitt mix, came with them.
Almost 12 years ago Kirk found Jake, believed to be 6 months old at the time, while walking the country roads near his property. The pup followed Kirk home and the Chandlers couldn’t resist taking him in—with Peggy’s stipulation that he be an outside dog. They had him checked out by the vet and although he had a few issues, including a bout of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever from ticks, the Chandlers nursed him to health. And that stipulation Peggy had for being an outside dog? That lasted about a day!
Because of his brindle colored striped coat, Peggy suggested naming him Tony—after Tony the Tiger cereal mascot. The name was nixed by Kirk and their granddaughter who then proposed “Jake”, taken from a friend who had a pup named Jake. A good pup with a bit of a stubborn nature, the Chandler’s decided to provide professional training for Jake early on. It took 6 weeks but was well-worth the effort. Today Jake is described as a sweet family dog who knows his boundaries, does not get up on the furniture, sleeps in his bed in the living room, and keeps his beloved KONG bone outside, to name just a few of his good habits!
Jake’s KONG bone is always at his side when outside or in the garage. He was a chewer as a pup—tennis balls, Frisbees and even Kirk’s hip high waders were prey to Jake’s chewing habit. Kirk discovered the KONG bone/toy to substitute for other chewable items and it has worked like a charm.
Jake is not a water dog – he did not like the pond or the pool on the Chandler’s previous property and he was very nervous when people were in the pool. In Buffalo Creek he loves being on the golf course and watching the golfers who know him by name. One even presented him with a golf ball with “HI JAKE” written on it! Similar to many dogs, he hides during thunderstorms. He is not a barker, except when seeking attention, but he does “sing” his good-byes as guests leave the Chandler’s home.
Jake is known and loved by all the neighbors and even has a girlfriend—Stormy—down the street who he often has playdates with. Jake does not run after squirrels but did get sprayed by a skunk once when he chased it behind a wood pile at the Chandler’s previous home, thinking it was a feral cat. He loves his daily walks and when Kirk asks Jake if he wants to go on a TRIP (meaning car ride), Jake heads for the garage. Jake is on prescription food so the Chandlers are good about not feeding him human treats, although when the grandkids are around Jake appreciates the few crumbs they leave behind!
Twelve years ago Jake was fortunate to find his forever home and family when he followed Kirk home on that country road. A happy ending for Jake, but like so many rescue stories we read about, one that has given back so much more to the Chandlers with his love and companionship.
