Visiting Ephesus Turkey
The Amphitheatre at Ephesus, able to accommodate some 24,000 people
Harriet and I had an amazing experience when we visited the ancient city of Ephesus, near Izmir Turkey. Ephesus was a significant city located on the western coast of Turkey, known for its well-preserved ruins of historical importance. It was a major port city and a center of trade, culture, and religion during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Today, it is a popular tourist destination, offering a glimpse into the past with its well preserved and impressive archaeological sites. Located nearby is the Ephesus Archaeological Museum containing some amazing sculptures and statues, all dating back to the period.
Ephesus was originally constructed in the 10th century BC by Greek colonists but came under Roman control in about 129 BC. The city was famous in its day for the nearby Temple of Artemis, completed around 550 BC, which has been designated one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Its many monumental buildings included the Library of Celsus and an amphitheater capable of holding some 24,000 spectators. The amphitheater is still in occasional use today for concerts including most recently, Luciano Pavarotti, Sting, Elton John, and Julio Iglesias,
Today, the ruins of Ephesus are a favorite international and local tourist attraction and in 2015, the ruins were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
