The Galactic Gala
Sub Headline: A Night of Stars, Hope, and Heart for Bakersfield Families: Bakersfield comes together to support the mission of the Bakersfield Ronald McDonald House
Five years ago, over a simple lunch, a conversation sparked that would soon light up Bakersfield’s night sky. Scarlett Sabin, Director of the Bakersfield Ronald McDonald House, and Brie Lancaster, a dedicated supporter and advocate for local families, sat together discussing one pressing challenge facing the House: how to raise more funds during the pandemic to continue supporting families in medical crisis.
As the world slowed down and uncertainty loomed, one thing remained constant, families still needed a place to stay close to their children in the hospital. The Bakersfield Ronald McDonald House continued to open its doors every single day, offering comfort, care, and compassion to those navigating some of the hardest days of their lives. With fundraising opportunities limited, Scarlett and Brie knew they needed something extraordinary, something that would sustain the mission and remind the community that hope still shines even in the darkest of times.
That spark became the Galactic Gala, an event that would bring together the heart of Bakersfield; uniting families, community members, and partners under one cosmic theme of giving. What began as an idea to raise vital funds has transformed into a celebration of compassion, community, and connection.
From its very first year, the Galactic Gala captured the imagination of all who attended. With twinkling lights, galactic decor, and a universe of generous hearts, the event takes guests on a journey beyond the stars, reminding everyone that together we can make the impossible possible. Each year, attendees arrive dressed to dazzle, ready to enjoy an evening filled with entertainment, fine dining, and most importantly, purpose. Beyond the sparkle and celebration, the Gala remains a lifeline for families who rely on the Bakersfield Ronald McDonald House for stability and comfort while their child receives medical care.
The Bakersfield Ronald McDonald House, lovingly known as the “House that Love Built,” provides a home away from home for families with children in the hospital. With seven rooms — six for overnight stays and one for day use — families are given a place to rest, shower, and find peace away from the hospital environment. The House also provides snacks, laundry facilities, and essential toiletries, as well as a special MOPARS Hospitality Cart that makes weekly rounds. This mobile cart brings comfort items such as snacks, children’s books, coloring supplies, and small toys to families who may not be able to leave their child’s bedside. It costs approximately $175 per night to support one family, and thanks to fundraisers like the Galactic Gala, countless families have been able to stay close to their child without the added stress of financial burden.
The Gala’s success would not be possible without the steadfast support of its founding partners, McDonald’s, and our mission sponsors at Dignity Health Memorial Hospital. Together, they help ensure that every dollar raised directly impacts local families in their most vulnerable moments. These partnerships, built on compassion and community service, reflect the very heart of the Ronald McDonald House mission- to keep families close.
Over the years, the Galactic Gala has evolved into more than a fundraiser; it has become a symbol of unity and hope for Bakersfield. Each event is a testament to what can happen when a community comes together for a shared purpose. Local businesses, volunteers, and supporters rally year after year, auctioning, bidding, and celebrating, knowing their contributions help create lasting change for families right here at home.
For Scarlett and Brie, seeing the Gala come to life each year is a dream realized. What started as a lunchtime brainstorm between two women determined to help others has blossomed into a beloved tradition that continues to grow in impact and inspiration. Their shared vision, born from compassion, strengthened through partnership, and sustained by the generosity of the Bakersfield community serves as a reminder that every act of kindness, no matter how small, has the power to illuminate the darkness.
Today, the Bakersfield Ronald McDonald House stands as a shining example of what it means to serve with heart. Through community-driven efforts like this, families find comfort in knowing they are not alone on their journey. Every ticket sold, every sponsorship pledged, and every donation made helps keep the lights on for a family in crisis, allowing them to focus on what matters most- their child’s healing.
The Galactic Gala is more than an event; it is a celebration of love, resilience, and the human spirit. It is where the Bakersfield community gathers each year to remember that even in the vastness of our universe, the brightest stars are those who give selflessly to others. As the lights dim and the music plays, guests are reminded that the true magic of the evening is not found in the décor or the dancing, but in the hearts of those who give, the families who receive, and the community that makes it all possible.
For the Bakersfield Ronald McDonald House, the mission will always remain clear — to keep families close. Thanks to the unwavering support of our community and the generosity of events like the Galactic Gala, that mission continues to shine brighter than ever. We can’t thank this year’s Chairs of the Galactic Gala, Diana Mestmaker and Michelle Hardt, enough for hosting such a successful and unforgettable event. Their leadership, dedication, and love for our mission truly made the evening sparkle.
Save the Date: The next Galactic Gala will be held on September 30, 2026. We can’t wait to see our community come together once again under the stars to continue supporting the families we serve.
