Meet Greta

The Canine Companion that Stole the Osborn's Hearts

In November of 2008, Phil and Katie Osborne found themselves yearning for the warmth and joy that a canine companion brings to a household.  They were especially missing the presence of a four-legged friend that had passed five years prior. With Phil's recent retirement and his love for yard work, they anticipated that a new furry friend would not only fill their home with love but also keep Phil active outdoors during the impending winter months.

One day, during her lunch break, a stroke of serendipity led Katie to a dog adoption event in downtown Cleveland. Despite Phil's skepticism about finding a suitable match, Katie felt compelled to take a look. At the event, hosted by the Cleveland Animal Shelter, Katie's heart was immediately captivated by a precious puppy craving attention. Despite Phil's initial doubts, Katie persuaded him to join her downtown with a leash to welcome their new companion home.

The couple soon thereafter discovered that their new pup was born on September 9th,  from a mother sheltered on Cleveland's main streets. Initially believed to be a mix of German Shepherd and Retriever, they affectionately named her Greta to pay homage to her presumed German heritage. However, a surprising turn of events unfolded when a DNA test revealed Greta's true lineage—a fascinating blend of 30% Great Dane, 30% Akita, and the remaining third comprised of Lhasa Apso, Pekingese, and Dachshund. This unexpected revelation added an intriguing twist to Greta's story, considering her Japanese lineage despite her Germanic name.

Determined to provide Greta with the best care and training, Kate and Phil promptly enrolled her in sessions with "Lorenzo's Serious Training for Serious Results." These sessions not only enhanced Greta's obedience but also strengthened the bond between her and her owners. As Greta faced challenges such as hearing loss in her later years, the family remained thankful for the skills they acquired, including hand signals, which facilitated effective communication with their beloved companion.

Greta's unique quirks and antics have brought immeasurable joy to the Osborns' lives. From her exuberant reactions to delivery trucks—whom she undoubtedly believes are there solely to lavish her with treats and affection—to her consistent search for a half-eaten bagel in its original hiding spot from 12 years ago, her unexpected talents, like mole-catching, and charming demeanor have left an indelible mark on the family's hearts.

Katie fondly recalls Greta's amiable nature, often laughing at the thought of her welcoming an intruder into their home with open arms. Greta's endearing habits, such as raising her paw for affection or assuming a submissive posture at the door, epitomize her welcoming demeanor towards everyone she encounters.

For Katie and Phil, Greta's unwavering companionship and affection define her as an irreplaceable member of their household. Whether she's nestled on the couch or enthusiastically joining Sunday football games by interpreting touchdown signals, her presence has woven a tapestry of shared experiences that truly complete the Osborn home.
