DWA Visits The Dragonfly House: Where Hope Takes Flight

On August 20, members of the Davie Women’s Auxiliary visited The Dragonfly House, a Children’s Advocacy Center in Mocksville that provides hope, healing, and protection for children who have been victims of abuse. The center offers a safe, child-friendly environment where young survivors can share their stories and begin the journey toward recovery.
The name Dragonfly carries a beautiful meaning. In Japanese culture, the dragonfly is a symbol of courage, strength, and happiness. It is often seen as a creature of transformation and resilience, perfectly reflecting the mission of the center as it helps children find light and hope after dark and difficult experiences.
During our visit, the staff shared a touching story often told to children and families at the center:
Once upon a time, little water bugs lived happily together at the bottom of a pond. From time to time, one of them would swim up the stalk of a lily and disappear at the surface, never to return. The others wondered why their friends left and why they never came back. One little bug promised, “When it’s my turn, I will come back and tell you what it’s like up there.” Sure enough, he climbed the stalk and broke through to the surface. But when he reached the top, he was transformed into a dragonfly with beautiful wings. He could fly and see the world in a whole new way—but he could no longer return to the water to tell his friends.
They would one day understand when their time came. For now, they had to trust that something beautiful awaited them above.
This story is a gentle reminder of growth, transformation, and the promise of hope—just like the children who come to The Dragonfly House.
Our Auxiliary members were deeply moved by the important work being done there. The Dragonfly House not only advocates for the safety and well-being of children but also supports families and communities in creating a world where every child is valued and protected.
The Davie Women’s Auxiliary is grateful for the opportunity to learn more about this vital community resource and looks forward to supporting its mission in every way possible.
