Fireworks & Financial Freedom: An Annual Check-In for Your Future
The Fourth of July is one of the most spectacular celebrations of the year. Fireworks light up the sky, families gather around the grill, and we pause to celebrate the freedoms we enjoy. It also serves as a great reminder for another annual tradition that deserves just as much attention: reviewing your financial plan before small issues turn into expensive surprises.
Every summer seems to begin the same way. We’re juggling camp schedules, learning the latest social media trend, planning vacations, and wondering how the season suddenly became so expensive. You’re not alone. The good news is that with the right financial plan, those seasonal expenses don’t have to catch you off guard.
Freedom isn’t free. It requires planning, discipline, and preparation. Your financial future is no different.
Today, you can ask Siri or Alexa almost any question and receive an answer in seconds. That’s incredible technology. But who’s asking you the important financial questions? Better yet, when was the last time you asked yourself if you’re truly on track for retirement, protecting your family, or saving enough for the future?
These are conversations most families don’t have until it’s too late.
That’s why I meet with families just like yours. A complimentary financial review can help answer questions about retirement, college savings, protecting your income, and preparing for life’s biggest milestones. Sometimes the greatest value isn’t finding a new investment. It’s discovering a blind spot before it becomes a problem.
As we begin looking toward another school year, here are a few financial updates worth knowing.
Retirement Savings Continue to Improve
Retirement contribution limits continue to increase, allowing individuals to save even more for the future. While employer retirement plans are a great starting point, many families discover they aren’t enough by themselves.
Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) provide another opportunity to build long-term, tax-advantaged savings that can grow over time. The earlier you begin, the more time your money has to work for you.
College Doesn’t Have to Cost as Much as You Think
College costs continue to rise, but families who prepare early often have far more options than those who wait until senior year.
One of Florida’s greatest opportunities is the Bright Futures Scholarship. Students who meet GPA, testing, and service or work-hour requirements can significantly reduce the cost of college.
Another excellent opportunity is the Modern Woodmen Student Scholarship, which awards up to $10,000 to eligible graduating seniors who are members. Like many scholarships, planning ahead is essential because application deadlines arrive sooner than most families expect.
Protecting Your Future with 529 Plans and New Savings Opportunities
Scholarships are wonderful, but they shouldn’t be your only strategy.
A 529 Plan remains one of the most effective ways to save for future education expenses while allowing investments to grow tax advantaged. Depending on current rules and eligibility, these accounts may also provide flexibility for other qualified life goals.
Families may also begin hearing about the new Trump Accounts, a federal initiative launching in 2026 that is designed to encourage long-term savings for eligible children. Qualifying children receive an initial government contribution, and family members can add to the account over time. When the child reaches adulthood, the funds may be available for qualifying expenses such as education, purchasing a home, or starting a business, subject to program rules.
The common theme is simple: the earlier you start, the more choices you’ll have later.
As you enjoy July with family and friends, take a few minutes to review your financial blueprint. Celebrate your independence by making sure your retirement, your children’s future, and your family’s financial security are moving in the right direction.
Enjoy the fireworks, the backyard cookouts, and the memories you’ll make this summer. But when the smoke clears, ask yourself one important question:
When was the last time I reviewed my financial plan?
If you can’t remember, this July may be the perfect time to start. Your future self, and your family, will thank you.
