When She Smiles That Smile...

Meet Luna!

2020 was a year for the history books. It was the year Covid struck the United States and
changed everyone’s daily life. We saw the time at home as an opportunity to welcome a new
furry family member into our home. We adopted Luna from Austin Pets Alive. The idea of giving
a dog from an animal shelter a fur-ever home really resonated with our family because shelters
are often overcrowded and life in a cage is just sad.

Luna’s life began in a foster home. Luna’s mom was pregnant when she arrived at the shelter. A
sweet foster family gave Luna’s mom a temporary home while she delivered her puppies. I met
Luna at the foster home. She stole my heart during our first meeting. The next day I brought her
home. Our boys, Tucker and Mason, were 8 and 5 when they met Luna. Tucker’s first order of
business was teaching Luna to pounce. Looking back, the video footage is precious.

We don’t know Luna’s breed, but she’s full of energy even 5+ years later, and despite me
promising my husband that “puppy energy” fades. Oops, sorry Daniel. Speaking of Daniel (Dad
to Luna) he likes dogs, but he’s not the biggest dog lover in the house. Well, someone forgot to
tell Luna because she chose Daniel as “her person”. Her “dad proximity” sensor is strong. If he
moves, she moves. If he puts on shoes, she wants to go. It’s become a bit of a family joke.
Thankfully Daniel has taken it in stride. When anyone arrives home, Luna greets them with a
smile, yes a smile! If you haven’t seen it before, it’s a cross between funny and scary with all her
teeth bared into a smile. If you meet us on the trail, it’s 50/50 whether you’ll get a trademark
Luna smile or if she’ll rollover and show her belly.
