HOLLIN HALL PASTRY SHOP

A SWEET TRADITION

For 20 years, Hollin Hall Pastry Shop has been a neighborhood favorite—a place to grab fresh pastries and coffee, catch up with friends, or find the perfect cake or treat for a celebration. With French pastries, breakfast favorites, specialty drinks and something different in the pastry case almost every day, there is always a reason to stop in.
More than a bakery, the shop has become a gathering place for the community. On any given day, you might see moms meeting after school drop-off, retirees catching up over coffee, or young children enjoying hot chocolate and sweet treats. For many local families, Hollin Hall Pastry Shop has become part of the neighborhood’s daily rhythm.
The story of how it all began is almost as unexpected as discovering a new favorite pastry.
Owner Melvin Meadows began his career hanging sheetrock and spent his free time playing rugby. After a broken leg during one rugby match, a teammate offered him a job at his sandwich shop. Meadows started out logging daily sales before moving on to washing dishes. That experience eventually led him to follow the shop’s owner into a new venture: a bakery.
It was there that Meadows discovered a passion for baking and cake decorating. He began watching how the cakes were iced and practicing the techniques himself. He then went on to gain additional baking experience at a country club, building the skills that would eventually lead to his own pastry shop.
What started with a broken leg and an unexpected job opportunity ultimately became a 30-year career—and a beloved neighborhood bakery.
Meadows says his inspiration for opening his own business was simple: “I want to do whatever I want and how I want!” Two decades later, that independent spirit can be tasted in the shop’s variety and attention to detail. Meadows enjoys creating curiosity around a pastry and giving customers a reason to try something they may not have expected.
A Community That Showed Up
Like many small businesses, Hollin Hall Pastry Shop faced an enormous challenge during COVID. Being closed for many weeks had a significant impact on the shop’s cash flow. Meadows tried offering a community discount to encourage customers to return, but the response surprised him: customers insisted on paying full price because they wanted to help keep the shop open.
That support made a lasting impression. Since then, the number of customers visiting the shop each year has continued to grow—a testament to the relationship Hollin Hall Pastry Shop has built with the community over the years.
And the shop is still looking ahead. New things are on the horizon, including a new logo and a new website designed to bring the business up to date and make it easier for customers to find information and stay connected.
Holiday Baking at Hollin Hall
And with the holidays just around the corner, Hollin Hall Pastry Shop is ready to help make your Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations a little sweeter.
For Thanksgiving, the shop’s holiday pies are a local tradition all their own. Customers can order apple, pumpkin or sweet potato pies for $26, or choose pecan or lemon meringue for $28. Orders begin in early November, and pies can be picked up the day before Thanksgiving or on another date that works best for you. The pre-order deadline is the Friday before Thanksgiving.
When Christmas arrives, the shop pulls out another special treat: Yule Logs, or Bûche de Noël, available in three sizes and two flavor options. Orders begin in early December, with pickup available Christmas Eve or any date before December 24. Because the ordering deadline changes each year depending on the day Christmas falls, customers should call the shop for the exact deadline.
The holiday offerings also include Christmas Stollen Bread for $16, a yeast bread made with dried fruit and spices. Stollen orders should be placed two days in advance by 2 p.m.
So whether you’re bringing dessert to Thanksgiving dinner, looking for a festive centerpiece for your Christmas table or simply craving a warm pastry and coffee on a chilly morning, Hollin Hall Pastry Shop has something for the season.
After two decades, it remains a place where neighbors gather, celebrations begin and good food brings people together. This holiday season, Meadows and his team are ready to help make your celebrations a little sweeter—one pie, pastry, cake and cup of coffee at a time.
