Integrative care for lasting wellness

For many Belle Haven residents, Back to Health Center in Old Town has become a trusted place to feel better, move better, and take a more active role in their health. Rooted in a philosophy of care and connection, the practice reflects the spirit of a neighborhood where people show up for one another. At the center of it all is Dr. Shara Posner, a chiropractor and nutritionist who has been caring for local patients and families for more than 20 years.
Dr. Shara’s approach emphasizes prevention, consistency, and whole-person care. Her path into healthcare began with a strong academic foundation, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Maryland, followed by both a Doctor of Chiropractic degree and a Master’s in Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport. Today, she draws on that combined expertise to guide patients toward lasting health and wellness.
Inspired to create something more comprehensive, Dr. Shara founded Back to Health Center in 2004 with a vision of building a healthcare environment that goes beyond quick fixes. What began as a chiropractic office has grown into a multidisciplinary wellness center offering a wide range of services under one roof—reflecting the belief that long-term health is best supported through a connected, integrative approach.
Today, Back to Health Center provides chiropractic care for adults, children, and pregnant women, alongside services like acupuncture, massage therapy, spinal decompression, cold laser therapy, stretch therapy, and nutritional counseling. Patients also have access to advanced offerings such as IV and vitamin therapy, medical weight loss programs, and peptide therapy, as well as wellness-focused treatments like Kinesio taping, facial cupping, and body contouring.
All peptide programs are medically supervised and tailored to each patient’s goals, history, and lab work, supporting areas such as recovery, healthy aging, weight management, cognitive performance, and overall vitality.
Dr. Shara’s practice centers on integrative wellness, with a special interest in women’s health, pregnancy, pediatrics, and helping patients stay active through every stage of life. That focus is also shaped by personal experience—navigating a painful pregnancy while balancing work and family. A mother of two, Dr. Shara said that experience deepened her commitment to helping women and families find practical, effective ways to stay healthy and active.
Beyond the clinic, Back to Health Center is deeply involved in local initiatives. The team regularly participates in events, supports fundraisers, and shares educational content focused on movement, wellness, and early intervention. Dr. Shara is also actively engaged with organizations including Move2Learn and Alexandria Stylebook, helping to promote wellness efforts throughout the area.
Like many small businesses, Back to Health Center faced significant challenges during the pandemic. “One of our biggest challenges was navigating the uncertainty of the pandemic while continuing to care for patients safely and effectively,” Dr. Shara said. That period required flexibility and innovation, but it also led to meaningful growth. “That experience ultimately helped us evolve into a more comprehensive wellness center by enhancing our services, strengthening our team, and developing new programs focused on integrative care,” she says.
Looking ahead, Dr. Shara has ambitious plans. “The vision for Back to Health Center is to continue building on our role as a trusted destination for wellness in the Alexandria community while increasing access to innovative, patient-centered care,” she explains. This includes further developing peptide therapy, medical wellness services, and women’s health programs, while continuing to strengthen the practice’s chiropractic and rehabilitation foundation.
She is also focused on broadening educational outreach through workshops, partnerships, and events that encourage people to take a more active role in their well-being—an approach that resonates strongly in engaged neighborhoods like Belle Haven.
When it comes to advice, Dr. Shara emphasizes the importance of consistency. “My biggest advice is to be proactive with your health rather than waiting until something becomes a major problem,” she says. She highlights the value of everyday habits, noting that “small, consistent habits like moving your body regularly, managing stress, prioritizing sleep, and paying attention to pain or changes early can make a tremendous difference long term.”
She also encourages a shift in perspective around healthcare. “I encourage people to view health as an investment, not just a reaction to symptoms,” she said. “Recovery, maintenance, and wellness support aren’t luxuries—they’re essential to maintaining energy, independence, and quality of life.”
For Dr. Shara, connection is just as important as any treatment she provides. “Never underestimate the power of connection and a strong support system,” she says. In places like Belle Haven, where that sense of connection is part of everyday life, the philosophy behind Back to Health Center continues to shape how it serves the families and individuals who walk through its doors.
