Edy Gue: Cheerleading, Leadership, and a Bright Future

Edy Gue, a 17-year-old senior at Cabell Midland High School, is the daughter of John and Melanie Gue. Cheerleading has been a significant part of her life since middle school, and she has dedicated six years to the sport. "I grew up doing gymnastics until I was 13 years old. During seventh grade, I decided I wanted to do something different, so I tried out for the Barboursville Middle School Cheer Team," Edy shared with Stroll Barboursville. That decision set her on a path that led to competing on two all-star teams and concluding her cheer career at Cabell Midland High School.

Throughout her years in cheerleading, Edy has been influenced by many, but one coach stood out the most. "My favorite coach was Kat Bookwalter. She was first my coach during gymnastics when I was younger. Then, during my junior year, she became an assistant coach at Midland. She is always positive, motivating, and kind to me and my teammates," Edy said.

Her time at Midland Cheer has been filled with cherished friendships and strong bonds. "My favorite thing about Cheer is the friends I’ve made over the last four years. We have always been a close team, and I’ve loved getting to know everyone. We have built strong, lasting friendships."

Edy is a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club and was recognized with the National Rural and Small Town Recognition from College Board.

CMHS' cheer team won regionals during her sophomore year and recently placed in the top 10 at the UCA Game Day Nationals in Orlando, Florida. "My favorite moment was qualifying for Game Day Nationals two years in a row," she shared.

Beyond the athleticism and teamwork, cheerleading has taught Edy the importance of embracing new challenges. "From cheerleading, I learned to try new things. To advance in cheer, you have to constantly try new skills, and some might be scary." As she prepares to graduate, she offers advice to those interested in cheer: "Enjoy every moment and always stay positive during difficult situations."

Edy’s aspirations extend beyond the cheer mat. She plans to attend Marshall University to study Biology, with the ultimate goal of graduating from medical school and specializing in dermatology.

With Edy's dedication, positivity, and drive, she is sure to bring the same level of excellence to her future medical career as she has to her cheerleading journey.
