Meet 'Pops and Lovey' Ready

Rooted in Faith, Family, and Community

A very special gift I greatly enjoy.

For more than four decades, the Ready family has called Plumewood Drive home.  It's a place where they’ve built memories, raised children, and invested their hearts in a community they love dearly. When Devlin and Bill Ready moved into their home in 1983, they knew it was something special. What they didn’t realize was just how deeply this neighborhood would shape their lives, or how hard they would work to stay here for the long haul.

A Love Story That Started at Baylor
Bill and Devlin’s journey began at Baylor University, where they first met. Just three months later, Bill proposed, and the two were married on July 30, 1977. Their “Green and Gold blood,” as they fondly say, runs deep on both sides of the family.
In 1981, the couple welcomed identical twin daughters, Ferrin and Ashley, followed by their son Weston a few years later. Their three children grew up right here in the neighborhood, attending Spicewood Elementary, Laurel Mountain Elementary, Canyon Vista, and Westwood High School.  These schools still hold a special place in Devlin’s heart as an educator who taught in the district for 34 years.

Working Hard for a Dream
The Readys’ life in this neighborhood didn’t come without effort. “We’ve always valued hard work,” Devlin reflects. “Faith, family, and always doing your best. Those are the things that have shaped our lives.”
After decades (29 years) of teaching everything from first grade to reading intervention, Devlin retired from Round Rock ISD after a total of 34 years. But her love for the community and determination to stay in their home led her to keep working. For 25 years, she tutored local children to help supplement her teacher's salary, helping them succeed and ensuring that she and Bill can continue living in the neighborhood they love.
Bill spent his career in fire protection sprinkler systems, economic development, and commercial construction. Even in retirement, his hands stay busy. He’s known as the “Bronco guy” around the neighborhood, always willing to lend a hand to neighbors with mechanical needs and sharing his passion for classic Ford Broncos through the Lone Star Bronco Group.

Faith, Nature, and Family Adventures
When they’re not giving back to the community, the Readys find peace in the outdoors. “Camping and being in nature is where I feel closest to God,” Devlin says. That love for the outdoors has become a family tradition. Ferrin and her family in Colorado spend their summers hiking and camping in the mountains and their winters skiing the slopes. Ashley, who lives in Nashville, shares her love of cycling, gardening, and travel with her wife. Weston, still in Austin, spends weekends on Lake Travis or at their ranch in Castell, Texas, often with his sons Wyatt and Ford riding along for the adventure.
“We love being near water,” Devlin says. “The lake, the beach, rivers—it’s where our family resets.”

Christmas Traditions and Simple Joys
The Readys hold family traditions close, especially around the holidays. One of their favorite activities is piling into the car with their grandchildren, sipping hot chocolate, and driving through the neighborhood looking at Christmas lights while listening to festive music.
Devlin also fondly remembers the days when nearly every home in the neighborhood put a small Christmas tree in the yard, creating rows of glowing lights as far as the eye could see. “I would love to see that tradition come back,” she says with a smile.

A Special Gift and a Heart for Community
When Devlin retired, her final class at Spicewood Elementary gave her a Little Free Library, which now sits in front of their home.  It's a visible sign of her lifelong passion for literacy and learning. “It’s special to me,” she says. “My mother loved reading, and I loved to teach children to read, so sharing books with the neighborhood feels like a way to honor her and keep that spirit alive.”
The Readys have always made an effort to give back, from volunteering at Bethany Methodist Preschool and Spicewood Elementary to delivering Christmas trees and helping neighbors in need. “Community matters,” Devlin says. “We want to do our part to make it stronger.”

Family First, Always
Despite their busy lives and the miles that separate them, the Ready family stays close. With four grandsons, Van and Ty in Colorado and Wyatt and Ford in Austin, Devlin and Bill embrace their roles as 'Pops and Lovey' with joy.
When asked what she loves most about living in this neighborhood, Devlin doesn’t hesitate: “It’s home. This is where we raised our children, made lifelong friends, and built a life rooted in faith and family. We’ve worked hard to be here, and we never plan to leave.”
As the Ready family looks ahead, their story is a beautiful reminder that the foundation of a full and rich life is built on love, hard work, and gratitude for the blessings along the way.
