Brian Rickenbacker and his wife retired to Savannah 14 years ago, making their home in Ardsley Park and creating an outdoor space that thoughtfully complements their residence. Because the property is compact, Brian says his goal has been to keep the landscaping proportional to the space while maintaining harmony with the home’s character.

Brian installs and maintains the landscaping himself, sourcing materials from Herb Creek, Savannah Hardscapes, and Home Depot. His first major project was a dry stack retaining wall beside the sidewalk. While he completed most of the work himself, a stonemason friend helped by cutting and installing the bluestone coping. More recently, that same friend added a small bluestone patio in the backyard.

One of Brian’s favorite places is the teak bench beneath the magnificent old live oak in the front yard. From there, he enjoys watching neighborhood families pass by — a simple pleasure that reflects the warmth and charm of Ardsley Park living.

Gardening in Savannah does come with challenges. Brian’s yard is very shaded, so choosing plant material that can thrive in those conditions is important. The climate also encourages not only desirable plants, but plenty of weeds and vines. His best gardening advice is to choose plants that work in harmony with the property.

While Brian says an irrigation system would have saved him many hours of weekly watering, he has no major changes planned. In his words, “I think I have it about right.”
