Josh Garwood
Building Community Through Ultimate Frisbee

Josh Garwood, a dedicated athlete and community builder, has become a vital part of the Savannah Ultimate Frisbee scene. Originally from Salisbury, North Carolina, Josh moved to Ardsley Park three years ago and quickly made a name for himself through his enthusiasm for the sport and commitment to building an inclusive, supportive athletic community.
Josh’s introduction to disc sports began at the age of eight, learning to throw on a windy beach with his father. While it wasn’t love at first flight, his interest grew over time—especially after discovering Ultimate Frisbee at summer camp. Transitioning from sports like soccer and flag football, where movement with the ball is constant, to a game that requires players to stop upon catching the disc was a challenge. But over time, he came to appreciate the unique strategy and spirit of the game. By high school, he was organizing pick-up games; by college, Ultimate had become a weekly ritual.
Now playing for Ghost Bananas, a local team, Josh helped lead them to a fourth-place finish out of 18 teams in Savannah’s largest tournament of 2024. He is currently training for club team tryouts with hopes of joining a traveling team this summer.
More than just a competitor, Josh is a mentor and advocate. He supports new players through clinics and youth events, and promotes the sport's inclusive culture. His other passions—photography, live music, backpacking, coffee, and human and animal rights activism—reflect the same values of connection, expression, and compassion that he brings to the field.
For Josh, Ultimate Frisbee isn’t just a sport—it’s a way to build friendships, stay fit, and give back to a community that has become like family. Whatever energy he pours into the game, he says, it gives back tenfold.
