Inspiring Young Minds Through Hands-On Health Education: Public Health 4 Kidz

January marks a natural moment for fresh starts, curiosity, and renewed commitment to community well being—making it the perfect time to spotlight Public Health 4 Kidz, a Savannah-based organization transforming how children learn about public health, science, and the world around them.
Since opening in December 2021, Public Health 4 Kidz has dedicated itself to educating and empowering young people through creative, immersive, and genuinely fun learning experiences. Founded by lifelong Savannah resident Erica Gaines, the organization uses hands-on STEM activities, interactive labs, virtual global health “tours,” homeschool modules, and even a mobile science lab to spark curiosity in children ages 5–18. Their approach is simple but powerful: when kids actively participate in science, they understand it, connect with it, and see themselves in it.
Students who join Public Health 4 Kidz programs aren’t just observing science—they’re doing it. Lab coats, goggles, real equipment, and public-health–focused experiments turn every lesson into a memorable experience. Whether learning about water safety, food borne illness, pollution, disease prevention, or the environment, children step into the role of scientist and problem-solver, discovering how public health impacts their daily lives and communities.
A Program Built to Grow With Its Community
In just five years, Public Health 4 Kidz has seen extraordinary growth. What began as Erica and six interns has expanded to a dynamic team of 25 interns, dedicated staff, public health mentors, and volunteers from across the country. The organization now serves over 500 students in local school districts—and that number continues to climb.
In August 2025, Erica and her team opened the Public Health 4 Kidz Science Center, located at 2204 Skidaway Road at the Radiant Center. The space buzzes with activity each week, offering:
  • Open Labs on the first Saturday of each month
  • Homeschool STEM sessions every Friday
  • Hands-on experiments, dissections, and technology-driven learning
  • Special events and community workshops
Looking ahead, the organization is already gearing up for its first-ever science festivals on March 7 and June 27, 2026—major community events that will bring together local organizations, interactive science booths, and learning opportunities for families throughout Savannah.
The mobile science lab will continue to expand its reach as well, bringing engaging public health lessons to schools and communities in surrounding counties.
The Vision Behind the Work
Erica’s passion for mentorship and public health began long before her organization. A graduate of Georgia Southern University (B.S. in Health Science) and Armstrong Atlantic State University (Master of Public Health), she always dreamed of creating an accessible, trustworthy science education platform for children. The COVID-19 pandemic became the catalyst, motivating her to launch a program that strengthens public trust in science and introduces young people to real careers in public health.
When she isn’t working alongside her interns or meeting with families, Erica enjoys gardening, spending time with her family, relaxing in Hull Park, and—thanks to a new hobby—attending rodeos. She has been married for 21 years and has two teenage children: a son who plays basketball at Andrew College and a daughter completing her senior year at Savannah Arts Academy.
Advice for Families
Erica encourages Ardsley Park residents to stay connected to public health guidance and help teach children the importance of simple safety habits—like washing hands and wearing helmets on bikes, scooters, skateboards, or any wheels with speed behind them.
And for teens? Her message is direct: Don’t text and drive.
Staying Connected
Public Health 4 Kidz continues to deepen its roots in Savannah, strengthening community partnerships and opening doors for the next generation of scientists, health professionals, and curious thinkers.
