Richard Wofford
Fueled by Teamwork, Grit, and the Game of Rugby
From Ansley Park to Dartmouth Rugby
Richard Wofford grew up in Ansley Park and still calls it home when he’s not at Dartmouth College. Now a 20-year-old sophomore, he plays fullback for the Dartmouth Rugby Football Club, a position that demands both strength and quick decision-making. Richard first picked up a rugby ball at age nine.
“At first, it was just another sport my parents signed me up for,” he says. “But over time, it became the one I loved most.”
What keeps him hooked is the creativity the game allows. “There’s freedom to find your own play style and make your mark.”
Lessons On and Off the Field
His favorite memories aren’t just about wins—they’re about connection.
“I’ll never forget scoring a try in my first start,” he says, “but it’s the team dinners, bus rides, and late nights with teammates that stand out most.”
Balancing Dartmouth’s academics with rugby takes planning and discipline.
“If you manage your time well, you can give both school and sports what they deserve,” he explains. That sense of balance has shaped more than just his schedule.
“You’re never bigger than the team,” he adds. “Own your mistakes, take feedback, and keep learning.”
Family and Future Goals
Richard credits his dad, Russ Wofford, as his biggest supporter.
“He’s been there every step of the way—keeping me motivated after tough losses and pushing me to be my best.”
With the season wrapped, Richard’s focus is on constant improvement—whether chasing a national title, advancing in school, or serving in the U.S. Army.
His Advice to Younger Athletes
“Play hard, have fun, and don’t let winning be your only goal. The friendships last a lot longer than the games.”
