D.J. Vinson

My name is Derrick Maurice Vinson II (D.J.), and I’m 14 years old and in the 9th grade at The Montgomery Academy. My parents are Derrick and LaShunya Vinson, and I have two sisters, Alysa and Addi. Alysa is a senior at Faulkner University. She will graduate this month and get commissioned in the United States Air Force as a second lieutenant. Addi is my twin, and she’s also in the 9th grade at The Montgomery Academy. We have lived in Montgomery, AL, since I was three years old, and we moved to Wynlakes in May 2019. We have really enjoyed the neighborhood.
I’m on the varsity football and basketball teams at MA. The football team went 11-4 this season and was undefeated in post-season play. We successfully defeated the undefeated Catholic football team in the semi-finals to win a trip to the finals at Protective Stadium in Birmingham, AL. We fell short in the championship game, but that experience is definitely one I will never forget. As a freshman on the JV/varsity football team, I had 35 receptions for a total of 700 yards.
I’ve played football with the Montgomery Chiefs city league team since I was seven years old. I have enjoyed the good sportsmanship that I’ve learned over time. It’s truly not about winning or losing; it’s how you play the game. The friendships I’ve made are irreplaceable, and the bond is a brotherhood that is an extension of family. My mentor is Odell Beckham, Jr. His competitiveness and love for the sport encourages me to push myself beyond my limits.
My family has taught me to be thankful for the many opportunities that I have been blessed to have. I look forward to reaching the next level by embracing each day one day at a time.
