The Mat

Liberty Lake Yoga and Taekwondo

Barb and Corie Grew up in Southern Alberta, Canada, where they married and then moved to Montana, where Corie attended U of M pharmacy school. They moved to Las Vegas for 10 years and then moved to Liberty Lake 22 years ago to raise their family. They have two sons and daughters-in-law, a daughter, a grandson, and a French bulldog. They love to spend time at the lake, wake surf, bike, hike, ski, and spend time together with family and friends.

Barb was Inspired to open The Mat 12 years ago after working at the Liberty Lake Athletic Club for 11 years as a fitness instructor and group program coordinator. Barb saw a need in this community for a space that people could come together to experience the magic and healing of yoga. She has worked in the fitness industry and has studied taekwondo for over 30 years.  She is an RYT-certified yoga instructor and has studied extensively in the Baptiste power yoga program.

In the last decade, her focus has turned to mind-body fitness and nutrition.  As a nutritional coach, she helps her clients better their health from the inside out.  With a focus on finding a healthy sustainable lifestyle.

Corie brings his science back group as a pharmacist to The Mat to offer science-backed nutrition advice and counseling as well as Cryoskin solutions for fat loss and improved skin tone.

The Mat offers an array of accessible yoga classes, some more challenging than others, all of which emphasize the breath and functional movement with the intention to create a healing environment in which students can experience yogic teachings and start the grand homecoming back to the body, where so much wisdom is stored.

This year The Mat will be focusing as a team on healing the mind, body, and spirit through breath, meditation, and mindful movement. To create a safe space where anyone of any age and ability can come and begin the journey of healing through conscious relaxation and gain tools to cope with the stress of daily life.

Testimonials
“I have been a member of The Mat for 12 years now, and it has become part of my life.  The Mat is more than a yoga studio to me; it is a community that has made me stronger not only physically but mentally.  I have made many new friends because of this wonderful community.  Barb Oviatt and The Mat have helped me and so many people to feel part of something greater, especially through these difficult last couple of years.  Barb has been going above and beyond to help this community grow stronger, be it in person or online.  It is also great that I can leave Legacy Ridge and have a short drive to such an incredible studio.  I urge everyone to give The Mat a try in 2022!”

"Yoga was something I had wanted to do for 30 years.  I drove past The Mat almost daily for 10 years and, finally last March, I started classes at The Mat. It has been so rewarding and beneficial to my mind and body. I can not say enough good things about Barb Oviatt and the encouragement she has given me. I'm doing things I never thought I would ever be able to do."

Taekwondo is at The Mat!
Building strength, confidence, compassion, and leadership through martial arts.

Taekwondo is the Korean art of self-defense. Literally translated, tae means to kick or to strike with the foot, kwon means fist or to strike with the hand, and do means discipline or art.

Beyond the physical aspect of the martial art, it is designed as a non-violent practice and system of complete body exercises as well as being a way of life. It includes physical techniques, mental discipline, and a deep philosophy.

Practicing taekwondo offers a myriad of benefits, including:
PHYSICALLY - Students will develop coordination, gain strength, increase flexibility, and improve cardiovascular conditioning. All of these physical aspects help to develop a strong body.
MENTALLY - Students will build self-confidence, gain better judgment, and improve self-control. All of these mental disciplines help to develop a sound mind.
PHILOSOPHICALLY - While developing a strong body and a sound mind, it is appropriate to learn the valuable philosophical tools and lessons in life offered by taekwondo philosophy.

Among these lessons: The way to be honest, always standing for justice. How to respect and help others. The meaning of loyalty and courtesy.

By incorporating these aspects into their lives our students continue to develop strength, humility, and self-respect.
