A Year of Grit & Grace

Celebrating Isle of Hope’s Young Female Athletes

Anna Kate Mercer

Over the past year, Stroll Isle of Hope’s Amazing Athletes series has introduced readers to twelve talented young competitors, each with a story that captures the island’s vibrant athletic spirit. Among them, three stand-out girls — swimmer Collins Sewell, roller derby skater Chyler Ross, and multi-sport competitor Anna Kate Mercer — represent the very best of determination, sportsmanship, and drive.

Collins, featured in the November 2024 issue, was the first athlete ever highlighted in the series. A member of the Isle of Hope Sharks swim team, she spoke about her early mornings at the pool, her love of racing, and how the friendships she’s built with her teammates keep her motivated through every lap. Her focus and consistency set the tone for every athlete who followed.

By summer, readers met Chyler, the fearless middle schooler whose roller derby persona, “Crash Test Chy,” and signature yellow helmet made her an instant favorite in the July 2025 issue. Competing with the Savannah Junior Roller Derby, she shared how the sport taught her strategy, strength, and confidence — both on and off the track.

In September, Anna Kate rounded out the year’s highlights. A student-athlete known for her love of soccer and volleyball, she balances competition with academics, crediting her parents and coaches for teaching her the importance of teamwork and perseverance.

Together, these young women showcase the grit, grace, and joy that define Isle of Hope’s youth sports community. Their stories remind readers that achievement isn’t just about medals or wins — it’s about character, courage, and the support of a community that cheers them on every step of the way.
