Generations of Giving
Abby and Jan Johnson’s Legacy with the Junior League of Savannah
For Isle of Hope resident Abby Johnson, community service isn’t just a pastime — it’s a family tradition that spans four generations. Abby’s mother, Jan Johnson, holds the distinction of being the longest active member of the Junior League of Savannah, an organization dedicated to training women as community leaders while addressing local needs across Chatham County and beyond.
Abby grew up immersed in the League’s mission. “When people ask what the Junior League does, my response is always, ‘We create leaders,’” she said. From fundraising for the Ronald McDonald House to supporting programs like PeachCare, Park Place Outreach, Safe Shelter, and Fit Kids Fest, the League’s reach touches nearly every corner of the community.
Abby herself has carried on that legacy of service. As chair of the League’s signature Thrift Sale during Hurricane Matthew in 2016, she saw firsthand the power of women working together under pressure. “Have you ever had 100 women look to you for leadership? I have,” she said. “And I’ve seen them move mountains — sometimes twice in one year.”
Her passion for the League is deeply personal. Abby’s great-great-grandmother was among Savannah’s first 10 Junior Leaguers, and the family’s commitment has never wavered. “It’s rewarding to see both the immediate and lasting impact — from the funds raised to the leaders shaped,” she said.
Today, Abby and Jan continue their work through projects like mahjong fundraisers, advocacy initiatives, and community grants. To learn more or get involved, visit jrleaguesav.org.
