March officially marks the beginning of spring. In Historic Brookhaven, that usually means the advent of warmer weather and preparation for Easter celebrations. Despite having grown kids, we still make a big deal out of Easter in the Wargo house. My three adult children love to get Easter baskets, albeit the bounty is different from when they were young (think quality chocolate and gift cards vs. grocery-bought candy bunnies and stuffed animals).

We also still have an Easter egg hunt. My husband Joe and I stuff plastic eggs with coins and bills, then hide them throughout the house for the kids to find. We all get a laugh out of three adults racing each other, baskets in hand, to find the eggs with the big dollar amounts.

My family also plays a traditional Hungarian egg game that we call Kor for Kor. My father-in-law grew up playing it each Easter, taught Joe and his siblings, and we have continued the custom with our kids. Kor for Kor is essentially an egg tapping battle to determine the strongest egg. Each player has the same number of eggs. Points tap against points for a winner, then shegs (the bottom of the egg) go against one another. The winning point and sheg have one last clash, and an annual household winner is crowned.

When my kids were younger, we also went to neighborhood egg hunts, like those held at Little Nancy Creek Park. LNCP will once again host its annual egg hunt on April 8. Read about it and the Spring concert in our Upcoming Events section.

Many also celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this month. In our Resident Profile, long-time Historic Brookhaven resident Stacey McGrath tells Stroll Historic Brookhaven about her adopted second-town’s annual celebration in Ireland and shares the inspiration for her paintings of Irish landscapes and farm animals.

Our Precious Pet this month isn’t a bunny but a cat that could probably catch a rabbit. Biscuit, the Medford’s long-haired orange tabby, joined their household during Covid when daughter Adelaide came home from college. He is now known as the resident exterminator, and has a host of other fun nicknames.

Speaking of college, Leslie and Tyler Averitt, our spotlight family, met as 18-year-olds at the University of Georgia. They love to ski and even got engaged on a mountain in Breckenridge. Learn more about Leslie, Tyler, and their three boys in our cover feature.

This issue is packed with so much useful information! Find decorating resources, a tribute to Brookhaven’s retiring Police Chief Yandura, and more.

I’m already planning our May Mother’s Day and June Father’s Day issues. If you’d like to be part of our holiday features, contact me at lgwargo@aol.com. And as always, I’d love to hear any other news or stories you want to share.

Happy reading!
