From Prep Star to Pro Player: The Rise of Mason Nichols

With brains, talent, and heart, this Mississippi native is chasing his Major League dreams while staying grounded in faith and family.

At just 22 years old, Mason Nichols has already made a name for himself on and off the baseball field. A 2021 graduate of Jackson Prep, Mason went on to attend the University of Mississippi, where he majored in Biology and played college baseball for the Rebels.

During his time at Ole Miss, Mason became a standout athlete and scholar, helping the Rebels win a national title while graduating with a 4.0 GPA in biological sciences. Receiving an Honors Scholar in Biology from the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, Mason also earned several prestigious awards including the NCAA Walter Byers Scholar Athlete of the Year (which is the top NCAA academic scholarship), and the SEC H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar Athlete of the Year. Mason also was awarded the Taylor Medal, the university's highest academic recognition. Outside the diamond, he served on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), proving he’s a leader with both grit and grace.

Beyond the awards and recognition, Mason said the people at Ole Miss had the biggest impact on him, starting with his coaches, Mike Bianco and pitching coach Joel Mangrum. Bianco's pregame speeches had little to do with baseball but always provided a lesson. Mangrum's one-on-one meetings with Mason not only helped to develop his skills, but also deepen his faith.

Grounded in strong values, Mason is active in the Pinelake Oxford Faith community and often volunteers alongside his team. Described by those close to him as dependable, hardworking, and full of character, Mason's success is a reflection of his family roots, community spirit, and relentless drive.

In July, Mason was selected in the ninth round of the 2025 Major League Baseball draft by the Tampa Bay Rays. However, he is still committed to a future career in medicine. His hope is to combine his athletic and academic skills to help others through sports medicine or orthopedics. "I'd love it if I can combine those passions and experiences at the highest levels of baseball and use them to help people like I've been helped in the past," Mason said."

When he’s not training or competing, you’ll likely find him enjoying a meal at one of Jackson’s local restaurants, hunting with his dad, or relaxing with his teammates. A lover of Greek food, his favorite spot is Keifer’s.

Mason loved his time growing up in Eastover alongside his sister Mackenzie and dogs Finn and Seal. Whether it’s studying biology, casting a fishing line, or stepping up to the pitcher’s mound, Mason brings the same passion and purpose to everything he does.

Next stop? The big leagues.

Mason is the son of Kimberly and Michael Nichols.
