2022 marks the 20th year of the annual Frederick Law Olmsted (FLO) Gala!

During this special year, the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy will host their fall fundraiser for the first time ever on an Olmsted-designed parkway on Friday, Sept. 9

This year's gala will include a family-style table lining the parkway, food by Rich’s Catering and Special Events, silent and live auctions, and live music.
The conservancy has participated in Olmsted 200 this year, a bicentennial celebration of Mr. Olmsted Sr.’s 200th birthday. Alongside national and international organizations such as the National Association for Olmsted Parks and World Urban Parks, we continue to honor Frederick Law Olmsted’s parks, design principles, and his lasting influence on our communities. Olmsted believed the purpose of green space was to “refresh and delight the eye and through the eye, mind, and spirit.”
About Olmsted’s Historic Parkways
The word “parkway” was coined by Frederick Law Olmsted Sr. and his working partner, Calvert Vaux, in their proposal for Central Park and improved upon with their plan for the Buffalo Olmsted Park System. The idea was not just to link city and suburban roads but to have long green ribbons extending into the city from large parks. With extremely wide medians, parkways are lined with dense shade trees connecting the parks for users to travel through the system without leaving a park-like atmosphere. Their intention was to provide a relaxing experience with landscaped green spaces through populated, commercial, or industrialized areas.
